The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has docketed, or accepted for review, a combined license (COL) application from Entergy for a new reactor at the River Bend site in Louisiana. Entergy's application, submitted Sept. 25, is the 14th COL request the agency has accepted for review. Entergy seeks approval to build and operate an Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor (ESBWR) at the site, about 24 miles northwest of Baton Rouge, La. GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy said on Wednesday it has submitted the revised design documents for its Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor (ESBWR) to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. GE Hitachi said the submission marks a milestone in the company's effort to move forward with the 1,520-megawatt design which two U.S. utilities have selected to use for two new nuclear plants, some of the first reactors proposed after a three-decade lapse in U.S. nuclear expansion. Two other U.S. utilities dropped the ESBWR design fearing that the time needed to obtain NRC certification would slow their efforts to pursue construction of new reactors.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission today announced the opportunity to participate in the hearing on a Combined License (COL) application for a new nuclear reactor at the Fermi site in Michigan. Detroit Edison submitted its application Sept. 18, 2008, seeking a license to build and operate an Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor (ESBWR) at the site, approximately 25 miles northeast of Toledo, Ohio. The application (minus proprietary and security-related details), is available on the NRC Web site at: http://www.nrc.gov/reactors/new-reactors/col/fermi.html. On Nov. 25, 2008, the NRC staff determined that the application contains sufficient information for the agency to formally "docket," or file, the application and begin its technical review. Docketing the application does not preclude additional requests for information as the review proceeds; nor does it indicate whether the Commission will issue the license. The docket number established for this application is 52-033.

Detroit Edison Company; Notice of Receipt and Availability of Application for a Combined License On September 18, 2008, Detroit Edison Company filed with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC, the Commission) pursuant to Section 103 of the Atomic Energy Act and Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Part 52, ``Licenses, Certifications, and Approvals for Nuclear Power Plants,'' an application for a combined license (COL) for an economic simplified boiling water reactor (ESBWR) nuclear power plant, to be located in Monroe County, Michigan. The reactor is to be identified as Fermi 3.

Exelon Nuclear Texas Holdings, LLC; Notice of Receipt and Availability of Application for a Combined License On September 2, 2008, Exelon Nuclear Texas Holdings, LLC filed with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC, the Commission) pursuant to Section 103 of the Atomic Energy Act and Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Part 52, ``Licenses, Certifications, and Approvals for Nuclear Power Plants,'' an application for a combined license (COL) for two economic simplified boiling water reactor (ESBWR) nuclear power plants, to be located in Victoria County, Texas. The reactors are to be identified as Victoria County Station, Units 1 and 2.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will conduct a public meeting in Victoria, Texas, on Thursday, Aug. 7, to discuss how the agency will review an expected Combined License (COL) application for two reactors at the Victoria County site, about 13 miles south of Victoria. The prospective applicant, Exelon, has told the NRC it intends to apply later this year for a license to build and operate two Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactors (ESBWR) at the site.
