Progress seeks approval to build and operate two AP1000 reactors at the site, approximately 10 miles northeast of Crystal River. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued a schedule for the Combined License (COL) review of the South Texas Project (STP 3&4) expansion today. Based on the NRC's schedule, Nuclear Innovation North America LLC (NINA) - the nuclear development company jointly owned by NRG Energy, Inc. (NYSE:NRG) and Toshiba Corporation, anticipates receiving the COL for the new units in 2012. With this permitting schedule established, we can now move to complete the detailed design and construction schedules from pouring first concrete to fuel load and startup. Issuing the schedule marks the continuation of NRC's review based on a revision to the STP expansion application filed in September 2008. The revision incorporated a limited number of changes to enhance safety and increase the ability to complete the units on time and on budget using the proven NRC-certified Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) design.

AmerenUE has asked the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission to suspend its review of the company's July 2008 application for a combined construction permit-operating license to build a new nuclear unit at its Callaway plant in Missouri. In a June 23 letter to NRC released on Friday, Adam Heflin, senior vice president and chief nuclear officer, said "we have determined that it is in AmerenUE's best interests to suspend the review" of the COL application and requested "that the NRC staff suspend all activities" related to the review. AmerenUE announced in April that it was dropping plans to build a 1,600-MW Areva US-EPR reactor at Callaway because the company did not think Missouri state lawmakers would be able to overturn the state's ban on recovering costs on construction work in progress. AmerenUE spokesman Mike Cleary said June 26 that NRC's review of the COL continued after that decision while AmerenUE "looked at its options," but it is now deemed "prudent" to suspend the review.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission today announced the opportunity to participate in the hearing on a Combined License (COL) application for a new nuclear reactor at the Fermi site in Michigan. Detroit Edison submitted its application Sept. 18, 2008, seeking a license to build and operate an Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor (ESBWR) at the site, approximately 25 miles northeast of Toledo, Ohio. The application (minus proprietary and security-related details), is available on the NRC Web site at: http://www.nrc.gov/reactors/new-reactors/col/fermi.html. On Nov. 25, 2008, the NRC staff determined that the application contains sufficient information for the agency to formally "docket," or file, the application and begin its technical review. Docketing the application does not preclude additional requests for information as the review proceeds; nor does it indicate whether the Commission will issue the license. The docket number established for this application is 52-033.

Detroit Edison Company Fermi Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 3 Combined License Application Notice of Intent To Prepare an Environmental Impact Statement and Conduct Scoping Process Detroit Edison Company (Detroit Edison) has submitted an application for a combined license (COL) to build the Fermi Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 3 (Fermi 3) at its Enrico Fermi Atomic Power Plant (Fermi) site, located on approximately 1,260 acres in Monroe County, Michigan, on Lake Erie, approximately 25 miles northeast of Toledo, Ohio and 30 miles southwest of Detroit, Michigan.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has accepted for review the combined license (COL) application for an Evolutionary Power Reactor (EPR) at the Bell Bend site near Berwick, Pa. PPL Bell Bend submitted the application and associated information Oct. 13. PPL Bell Bend is seeking approval to build and operate an EPR at the site, approximately seven miles northeast of Berwick. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will hold public meetings Thursday, Dec. 4, in Crystal River, Fla., to discuss the environmental issues the agency should consider in reviewing a Combined License (COL) application for two new reactors proposed for the Levy County site near Crystal River. The NRC will meet with the public from 1 - 4 p.m. and 6 - 9 p.m. at the Florida National Guard Armory, 8551 W. Venable St. in Crystal River. Copies of the report are also available at the Citrus County Coastal Region Library, 8619 W. The Luminant application seeks approval to build and operate two U.S. Advanced Pressurized Water Reactors (US-APWR) at the site, about four miles north of Glen Rose. Progress Energy Florida, Inc. Acceptance for Docketing of an Application for Combined License for Levy County Nuclear Power Plant Units 1 and 2 By letter dated July 28, 2008, Progress Energy Florida, Inc. (PEF) submitted an application to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for a combined license (COL) for two AP1000 advanced passive pressurized water reactors in accordance with the requirements contained in 10 CFR 52, ``Licenses, Certifications and Approvals for Nuclear Power Plants.'' These reactors will be identified as Levy Nuclear Power Plant (LNP) Units 1 and 2 and located at a site in Levy County, Florida. A notice of receipt and availability of this application is currently awaiting publication in the Federal Register.
