The famous ecological Bellona Foundation, whose expert atomic physician Andrei Ozharovsky was arrested in Belarus, sent an official request to Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov asking that his office look into the arrest of the Russian citizen. The request, published on the NGO's website says a representative of Russia's consular mission to Belarus hasn't met with Andrei Ozharovsky yet. Bellona notes that Ozharovsky was arrested for his intent to distribute at the hearing copies of a report entitled "Critical Notes on the State Environmental Impact Study of the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant," which he had co-authored. Arrested Ozharovsky has not been given access to a lawyer.

"A contract employee who failed to disclose a prior arrest has caused the owners of the Oyster Creek Generating Station to receive a violation from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The employee's arrest constitutes a violation of the plant's license conditions. An NRC investigation completed on Jan. 14 concerned a contract employee working for Bartlett Nuclear Inc. at the Forked River-based power plant. The worker failed to report a prior arrest in accordance with Oyster Creek security plan requirements. The NRC confirmed the employee, who had unescorted access to vital areas of the plant, deliberately failed to report an arrest. Regulations require individuals with unescorted access to the facility to report any arrest or criminal charges."

The four women who were arrested Monday for entering the gates of Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant to protest the plant's operation were cited for unlawful trespass and released shortly after being taken into custody. Even though some of the women have been arrested at the gates up to seven times, those charges were all dropped prior to a court hearing. Arrested were Harriet "Hattie" Nestel, 70, of Athol, Mass., Ellen Graves, 69, of West Springfield, Mass., Frances Crowe, 90, of Northampton, Mass., and Patricia "Paki" Weiland, 66, also of Northampton. Nestel said having the charges dropped against them is "very frustrating." "We want to be able to testify in court on the reasons we were there and why what we did is really a preventative action," she said, during a telephone interview on Tuesday. "To save lives. We want to be able to say that up front in court." The Windham County State's Attorney's office, which decides which cases should proceed to the courts, has declined to press charges because it doesn't want the court to be used to make political statements.

But the women, wearing tie-dye T-shirts and carrying folding stools and signs, ignored the entreaties of the armed guard at the guardhouse, marched right past him through the second chain-link gate and then sat down with their folding chairs and protest signs.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has issued an order banning a former senior reactor operator at the Susquehanna nuclear power plant from any involvement in NRC-licensed activities for three years. Susquehanna is a two-reactor plant located in Salem Township (Luzerne County), Pa., and operated by PPL. NRC took the action after Keith Davis failed to respond to an earlier order issued by the NRC. Davis was arrested on June 19, 2006, for driving under the influence of alcohol. Under plant procedures and NRC requirements, he was required to report the arrest to PPL upon his first day back at work, which was June 27, 2006. However, he failed to do so. After the arrest came to light, PPL moved Davis to another position with the company and subsequently dismissed him. His operating license was terminated.

Mordechai has been discouraging his many supporters from contacting him. But the authorities have shown little sympathy to his response to their requests that he should keep a much lower profile.

A GRANDMA for peace was arrested yet again after protesting against weapons of mass destruction. Veteran campaigner Joan Meredith, 79, from Malpas, was taking part in the CND/Trident Ploughshares Big Blockade at the Aldermaston nuclear plant in Berkshire when she was arrested on Monday last week. ICHIHARA, Chiba -- A man who stole a container with radioactive material in it from a company here and apparently dumped the substance in a river in Yokohama has been arrested, police said. Tomonori Iso, 40, was arrested on suspicion of stealing a container of iridium 192 from a storage room at Non-Destructive Inspection Co., in Ichihara, Chiba Prefecture. He has reportedly admitted to the allegations against him.

Six anti-nuclear power protesters were arrested at the North Anna power plant's visitor center yesterday after refusing to leave at its closing time. Richard Zuercher, a spokesman for Dominion Virginia Power, said about 25 protesters showed up at the visitor's center near Mineral in Louisa County at about 2:30 p.m.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is revising its estimates of how long nuclear waste can be kept safely at power utilities as confidence shrinks that the radioactive material ever would be shipped to a Yucca Mountain repository. The agency could decide this summer that spent nuclear fuel could be stored securely in above-ground concrete and steel casks for at least 120 years, which is 20 years longer than current policy, NRC Chairman Dale Klein said at a Senate hearing today. A former reactor operator at the Peach Bottom nuclear plant deliberately failed to report a drunk-driving arrest, according to an investigation by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. In a second apparent violation of nuclear requirements, the NRC said a former maintenance supervisor at the plant who was given unescorted access privileges failed to report that he had been dishonorably discharged from the military. A letter noting the apparent violations was sent to Peach Bottom owner Exelon on June 5. Both alleged violations followed probes by the NRC's Office of Investigations. In the investigation of the reactor operator, the NRC said it was determined the operator deliberately failed to promptly report his drunk-driving arrest and criminal charges as required.

"The ACLU has filed a suit against the Brattleboro Police Department on behalf of four protestors arrested last March. During an economic stimulus conference the protestors silently held up a banner calling for the closure of the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant in Vernon. All four were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, but the charges were later dismissed. However, the ACLU says the police violated the protesters' First Amendment right to peacefully protest. They're seeking damages, costs and fees."

A jury found Twin Falls podiatrist and anti-nuke activist Peter Rickards guilty of battery and trespassing at a public meeting after a two-day trial that ended Tuesday, Rickards said Wednesday. Rickards was arrested June 16 while passing out leaflets at a public information meeting put on by Alternate Energy Holdings Inc. at the privately owned Glenns Ferry Opera House. He was also accused of shoving Doug McConaughey, who AEHI officials say was a part-time consultant who no longer works for the company. AEHI is seeking to build a nuclear power plant in Elmore County, a project Rickards deeply opposes.

More than 30 people were arrested when anti-nuclear protesters blocked entrances at the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) in Berkshire. Campaigners said hundreds of people gathered at Aldermaston to mark the start of World Disarmament Week. They are concerned the facilities are used to design and manufacture a new generation of nuclear warheads.
