Study Finds That Online Education Beats the Classroom - NYTimes.com - 2 views

  • Study Finds That Online Education Beats the Classroom
  • We pulled our son out of a useless junior high, let him play guitar and video games at home all day, and used an online charter school to teach him ourselves at night

It is interesting that the study states this true for adults, yet the picture was of a 9 year old. There is not a lot of data to support that the results of the study is true for most K-12. It is clear that it is generally unsuccessful for the unmotivated or those with limited reading skills. Many have pushed online ed for K-12 credit recovery and GEDs. It has not been successful with most of those students. Using blended models in K-12 has had more success.

You mean the teacher still matters? | The Thinking Stick - 2 views

  • No longer is online learning just reading a module and answering questions — it can now include synchronous or asynchronous discussions and peer-to-peer learning exercises.
  • you can’t take the old model and apply it to a new medium….you need a whole new model of learning
  • “On average, students in online learning conditions performed better than those receiving face-to-face instruction.”
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • Maybe it’s the best teachers taking the best approach, which incorporates the use of online tools to enhance the learning. In the end a good teacher is still needed.
