In South Korean classrooms, digital textbook revolution meets some resistance - The Was... - 1 views

  •
South Koreans realize that technology doesn't always bring progress. Not going as ebook as planned according to this washington post article. "But South Korea, among the world's most wired nations, has also seen its plan to digitize elementary, middle and high school classrooms by 2015 collide with a trend it didn't anticipate: Education leaders here worry that digital devices are too pervasive and that this young generation of tablet-carrying, smartphone-obsessed students might benefit from less exposure to gadgets, not more. Those concerns have caused South Korea to pin back the ambition of the project, which is in a trial stage at about 50 schools. Now, the full rollout won't be a revolution: Classes will use digital textbooks alongside paper textbooks, not instead of them. First- and second-graders, government officials say, probably won't use the gadgets at all."

The most powerful technology is often simple and hidden - 0 views

  •
Learning analytics and personalization only begins with technology for "drill and kill" but certainly that is one place we should always use it, like this student learning spelling words. Article from scholastic about Read 180. "But while this student practiced his words, the most powerful stuff was happening behind the scenes. Out of eyesight. With every keystroke, the technology gathered data on his spelling fluency. It calculated how fast he was at spelling each word. It remembered what he got right and got wrong, and knew exactly how many times it had to re-ask the same word before the student really knew it. Every bit of data it collected would update and add to the student's personal learning profile - a collection of data the teacher could look up at any time to track progress and glean insights on the student's accomplishments and struggles, and that the computer could interpret and display for the student in ways that empowered him and showed him how successful he had been.

elearnspace › What are Learning Analytics? - 0 views

  • “the use of data and models to predict student progress and performance, and the ability to act on that information”.
  • Effective utilization of learning analytics can help schools and universities to pick up on signals that indicate difficulties with learner performance. Just as individuals communicate social intentions through signals well before they actually “think” they make a decision, learners signal success/failure in the learning process through reduced time on task, language of frustration (in LMS forums), long lag periods between logins, and lack of direct engagement with other learners or instructors.

What Can We Learn About Assessment From Video Games? | edte.ch - 0 views

  • The types of “dynamic and ongoing feedback” that help a player improve at the point of learning - the summary sheets help us to reflect on how we scored but this is the same as what grade did I get
  • Not just seeing the individual method of feedback in isolation but placing it within the whole picture, the whole plan for supporting new players and helping them to be successful.
  • Unfortunately points scoring and rewards are in the short term ‘easy’ ways for teachers to motivate pupils to do what the are told. Look at the number of ‘team points’ and ‘star charts’ that exist in primary schools. This may get them to behave in the required way, but it teaches pupils that only things that are worth doing are things that get them a number score…
