English Module 2.4: Concordance programs - 2 views

  •
This 50 page article, which was referenced in DuBravac (2013), provides a very thorough overview of corpus linguistics and concordancing for language classes. There is a ton of very relevant and practical information here! This link defaults to a section providing sample classroom corpus activities. My favorite uses a corpus for Tennyson's poem Mariana as a way to engage in literary analysis! Corpus Linguistics, which is dealt with by Tony McEnery & Andrew Wilson inModule 3.4. Section 2.2 of this module includes a brief introduction to corpus linguistics.

I came across this corpus while looking for corpora that are tagged for speech acts. I haven't had a chance to explore it too much yet, but it looks like it definitely has some potential pedagogical applications.

The Voice International Corpus - 1 views

This is a corpus of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). The texts come from spoken interactions between nonnative speakers of English in ELF contexts (i.e., when speakers from different L1 backgrounds must use English in order to communicate).

WebCorp: The Web as Corpus - 1 views

I read about WebCorp in Dubravac's chapter 3, and it is definitely worth checking out. You search for words or phrases, and the website pulls up concordance lines (key word(s) in context) for the words as they are found on webpages. The search results also include links to these websites.

We talked about MICASE in class, but if you aren't familiar with the site, you might not realize that they also offer a set of prepared lesson plans and activity ideas that use MICASE corpus data.

This was part of a handout given at a presentation in the Electronic Village at TESOL. This application takes queries of one or more words submitted to its query box.It provides a list of patterns in which the query word is conventionally used. In the case of multi-word queries, patterns in which the query words conventionally co-occur.

kfNgram Information & Help - 0 views

This is a free program (for Windows only) that easily allows you to input text and find N-grams and phrase frames. This might be useful for teachers who want to be able to look for these features in the texts their class will be reading, for example. Although concordancing software such as Antconc can do the same thing, this program is nice for someone who doesn't need all the other functionality of a program like Antconc.

Using corpora to (in)validate claims about idioms - 0 views

  •
Found this interesting blog post about how you can pretty easily use corpora to validate claims about idiom frequency. I think this could be a useful technique for evaluating certain kinds of textbooks as well as selecting fixed expressions for your own teaching content/materials.

Google gaudi - 1 views

Hi, unfortunately, this Google lab seems to be defunct, at least at the moment. However, it really has some great potential for ESL teaching. Essentially, the idea was for Google to go through some of its videos about politics and transcribe the text. Then, someone looking for a video with specific content, phrases, or words could search through the videos without having to rely on the way in which the video was tagged or its title. It's almost like corpus linguistics meets Youtube. You could pick a word or phrase and show a lot of clips about how "real" speakers use it.

English Vocabulary Profile - 0 views

  •
Hi NAU CALL, I just came upon this interesting corpus-based descriptive vocabulary resource for teachers who use the CEFR. Here's the site's promo: The English Vocabulary Profile offers reliable information about which words (and importantly, which meanings of those words) and phrases are known and used by learners at each level of the Common European Framework (CEF). Cambridge University Press is making the A1-C2 English Vocabulary Profile available free of charge to teachers and educationalists around the world for the time being.
