This article is aimed toward faculty in mathematics departments who are working to increase the number of high-achieving mathematics students from racial and ethnic minorities and for researchers investigating these endeavors. The Emerging Scholars Program (ESP) is one of the most widespread models for supporting such increases. It is also one of the oldest, so there is a considerable body of research, both quantitative and qualitative, related to its impact. Whether or not one chooses to implement an ESP, this discussion of the history, philosophy,

Text messaging in class may affect college students' learning -- ScienceDaily - 0 views

  •
College students who frequently text message during class have difficulty staying attentive to classroom lectures and consequently risk having poor learning outcomes, new research shows. Because it is difficult to demonstrate that texting alone can have a direct impact on students' cognitive learning, researchers used path model analysis to describe the relationships between texting, as a "mediator" or intervening variable, and cognitive learning.

Matlab modeling tools helpful for advanced level courses - 0 views

  •
The Matlab tools are extremely helpful in mathematical modeling and run very well on a home computer. My application was in software engineering at the Master's level. Student license costs are about $200 - $300 or so, depending how many tools are downloaded.

This seems favorable for WGU and other competency-based models. I hadn't seen this before - thanks for sharing!

Given the fluid nature over the past 15 months, it is good to see. Much like hmoore661, it appears to complement competency-based models.

@hmoore681 @ wfroese Thank you for visiting. ILCCO is organizing a meeting/training for the DL leaders in each institution to understand how that impacts what are doing in our current online programs.

Measuring the Success of Online Education - 0 views

Interesting read - I found the shift from taped lecture to a more interactive setting interesting... "Udacity, along with other MOOC designers, is moving rapidly away from the video lecture model of teaching toward an approach that is highly interactive and based on frequent quizzes and human "mentors" to provide active online support for students."

Whoo Hoo! I made it in. I feel like I belong to something! All kidding aside, this list describes the characteristics we need to be successful online learners and what qualities our students need to remain successful in our classes. Like the facilitator, the online student possesses unique qualities. The online students of today consist primarily of working people who are trying to better their opportunities. This however is changing, as more and more young and older people become aware of the online model.

Trying Something New? Seven Things that Boost Success Rates - 1 views

  • Don’t just up and do it because you think it sounds like a cool idea.

So common with tech! Rather than first considering the learning objectives and how best to accomplish them, many start with some cool thing they'd like to use and work in reverse.
  • aren’t done in isolation

You don't have to teach in a silo! Running new ideas past a colleague and discussing them can help you to better anticipate potential pitfalls and develop preventive strategies. Also, others might get excited about your idea too and join in!
  • It’s essential that you receive feedback from students
    • Denise Caparula

Some go out of their way to avoid student feedback, as if it makes them somehow weaker. Show your human side, model the learning process - that's one of the best things you can do for your students!

  • As with most everything else in teaching, the second time through is better

It's really frustrating when an instructor tries something new, then automatically discards it because it wasn't perfect the first time. What is? Try it again with some tweaks, don't just give up.
  • Start planning what you’ll do differently
    • Denise Caparula

One of the best "teaching tricks" out there is to keep a running log/journal/etc of changes you want to make the next time through. Put it in writing somewhere you won't lose it; you may think you'll remember it, but it's more likely that thought won't return to you until you encounter the same problem next time.

Encouraging Online Learner Participation - 0 views

  •
Sustained, high-quality student participation usually doesn't happen on its own in the online learning environment. The instructor needs to model participation, create assignments that encourage it, and foster an environment that supports it. Here are some ways that I promote student participation in my online courses.

Statistical modeling tool: practical and powerful - 2 views

  •
The statistical software language R is open-source with free download for Windows PCs. It's a bit cumbersome to learn with the help manuals running to 4,000 pages of "stream of consciousness" thinking. However, it's very powerful, and will readily do things that (say) Excel cannot do. Scripts can be saved to Word documents for later re-use.
