Few ideas about teachers' professional growth resonate with me more than those of Richard Elmore, professor of educational leadership at Harvard, who has gone as far as to argue that school structures make learning for adults unlikely at best and nothing short of impossible at worst. In a 2002 report for the Albert Shanker Institute, Elmore wrote, As expectations for increased student performance mount and the measurement and publication of evidence about performance becomes part of the public discourse about schools, there are few portals through which new knowledge about teaching and learning can enter schools; few structures or processes in which teachers and administrators can assimilate, adapt, and polish new ideas and practices; and few sources of assistance for those who are struggling to understand the connection between the academic performance of their students and the practices in which they engage. So the brutal irony of our present circumstance is that schools are hostile and inhospitable places for learning. They are hostile to the learning of adults and, because of this, they are necessarily hostile to the learning of students. (pp. 4-5)

It took me about an hour to find this podcast. I wanted a podcast that addressed topics that are could be understood by a student in a college level math class. These short podcast give a step by step solution for various algebra problems and could be used as a supplemental way of explaining a particular problem. I would use these podcast if there were a few more examples for each topic. For instance, I would like at least 3 podcast for the common denominator problem. I would probably use the podcast as a section review or with a worksheet that had similar examples.

This article describes the use of social media as a bridge between students, teachers, and the online course. Many students are currently using social media such as Facebook and Twitter. The challenge for instructors is to learn how to leverage that as as an opportunity to create value for the student, the course, and for the instructor. Posted: Like all college and university faculty, August means finalizing fall syllabi and lesson plans, and pre-reading articles for fall courses. For many professors, this process includes thinking (or rethinking) on how to leverage social media to engage students in the semester's learning.

Having experimented with social media for learning -- especially Twitter -- across my courses, I am convinced that social media offers powerful opportunities to connect with students, by providing new ways for them to own the learning....

Really outstanding but lengthy session on how to use a wiki in teaching. Within the first 20 minutes he talks about using a wiki for his own course notes--he can access from any computer when he has a thought; an example, he says, of "cloud computing." He also explains how he started using a wiki for student note-taking. None of his students were taking notes because his lecture was "making sense." Instructor's (Richard Buckland) worry was that maybe later it WOULDN'T make sense. He tried handing out notes to studetns, each student taking turns keeping notes, and others. One student suggested a wiki and he says it's worked fantastically! COLLABORATIVE LECTURE NOTES. Now when he lectures he displays a brief outline of his notes which students then mark-up for themselves. Students now own their notes! He reviews at night and sees where students have trouble. He does NOT change the notes. He waits because often students will comes back to fix. But if he sees the error persists by the next lecture, then he knows he needs to correct a misconception.

The idea of storyboarding was developed at the Walt Disney Studio during the early 1930s. storyboard for video production is essentially a large comic of the film or some section of the film produced beforehand to help directors, cinematographers and television commercial advertising clients visualize the scenes and find potential problems before they occur. Often storyboards include arrows or instructions that indicate movement.More recently the term storyboard has been used in the fields of web development, software development and instructional design to present and describe, in written, interactive events as well as audio and motion, particularly on user interfaces and electronic pages.

Abstract In something of a landmark for education Knowles (1970) suggested an important change in the way in which educational experiences for adults should be designed. The approach, known as andragogy, contrasts quite sharply with pedagogy which is the teaching of children. This paper suggests there is benefit in moving from andragogy towards truly self-determined learning. The concept of truly self-determined learning, called heutagogy, builds on humanistic theory and approaches to learning described in the 1950s. It is suggested that heutagogy is appropriate to the needs of learners in the twenty-first century, particularly in the development of individual capability. A number of implications of heutagogy for higher education and vocational education are discussed. top Heutagogy

October 19, 2011 "If seeing, hearing, or sharing with your online students could help the learning process, then Google+ Hangouts could be a great, engaging venue for your students." This site outlines 6 practical uses for Google Hangouts in an educational setting. Hangouts are great for small meeting of 10 or less. In this site, there are screenshots to explain the Hangouts with extras and screen sharing. This would be a great way for students to collaborate on a project.

This website has a great list of top tech tools for formative assessments. Although they are primarily for k-12 teachers, there are many ways to incorporate into a post secondary course such as increase the complexity of questions or have the students write their own assessments. Most of these are free and and are easy to use and teach. Teachers can use these tech tools for easy and interactive formative assessments.College instructors can use these tools to measure the students' understanding of the material and assess if review or re-teaching is necessary. Small assignments can be indicators for instructors and assist in "taking the pulse" of the class.
