This week on New Tech City we're talking MOOCs or Massive Open Online Courses that major universities and newly formed education companies are offering for FREE (and that's no acronym). Hundreds of thousands of people around the globe are taking these classes. Could this be the future of higher-level degrees?

The faculty at my college have been discussing this current article that discusses how "at least 45 percent of undergraduates demonstrated no improvement in critical thinking, complex reasoning, and writing skills in the first two years of college, and 36 percent showed no progress in four years." The Journal of Online Learning and Teaching The impact of social networks on lives of the majority of young adults has been enormous, although their impact on education is less well understood. Some consideration has been give to the role Facebook plays in higher education and in the transition from secondary to tertiary education, but little analysis has been conducted on the role of the microblogging social network Twitter. By examining the use made of this service by two cohorts of students, this study found that Twitter is easy for students to use and popular with the majority once they have experience with it. For this study different patterns of use between individuals in the study and between the two different student cohorts were observed, as was the emergence of informal online peer support networks. The results of this study suggest models for future use of microblogging services.

Even as today's college student experiences a variety of classroom forms (i.e., "brick and mortar", virtual, hybrid), social media's use and influence are evolving depending on context. Widely embraced as a tool for personal or business purposes, the notion that social media could be an effective tool for educational purposes has received recent attention. #TT1711

Learning management systems (LMSs) have dominated the teaching and learning landscape in higher education for the past decade. A recent Delta Initiative report indicated that more than 90 percent of colleges and universities have a standardized, institutional LMS implementation. LMS-related decisions continue to rank among the most pressing IT issues for campus leaders and administrators, as explained in EDUCAUSE Review's "Top-10 IT Issues, 2009," which lists several challenges associated with LMS implementations. While the LMS has become central to the business of colleges and universities, it has also become a symbol of the higher learning status quo.
