Learning management systems (LMSs) have dominated the teaching and learning landscape in higher education for the past decade. A recent Delta Initiative report indicated that more than 90 percent of colleges and universities have a standardized, institutional LMS implementation. LMS-related decisions continue to rank among the most pressing IT issues for campus leaders and administrators, as explained in EDUCAUSE Review's "Top-10 IT Issues, 2009," which lists several challenges associated with LMS implementations. While the LMS has become central to the business of colleges and universities, it has also become a symbol of the higher learning status quo.

This article describes the increased use in the eLearning industry to HTML5 as an authoring tool. Moving away from things like Adobe Flash has allowed new opportunities and avenues of creation possibilities to content developers. HTML5 has wide support across many different browsers and LMS platforms which makes the use of HTML5 an easy transition/addition. HTML5 does, however, have difficulty working with older browsers such as IE8. Using authoring tools such as Adobe Captivate 9 and Articulate Storyline makes HTML5 easy to use.

I often use Jing to capture images or provide instructions on how to navigate through a LMS, Jing allows you to use arrows to direct student to the correct location on the screen.

In Canvas LMS, there is a course called "Using Social Media for Academic and Professional Development". It will help you how to use social media in your courses.

YouTube live streaming can be a way to hold an synchronous class session if your LMS doesn't include that feature. While it takes a bit of effort to set up, once you do it can be a decent way of having live video with a corresponding real-time chat. It can also be made private/unlisted.

Otter processes your audio or video files - in real time or after they are created - and generates a text file with a transcript. It automatically recognizes and designates different speakers, and allows you to give them names before downloading the text file. The fee tier gives 600 minutes of transcription per month. I am uploading my lecture videos after they are generated, and posting the transcriptions in my LMS for students.

Moodle Chat allows HTML, so if you need to have a robust chat through their LMS, you can learn, copy, and paste some HTML.
