Music research at the CASS is concerned firstly with the design and construction of the hardware and software technologies associated with the production of music and sound and secondly, with the creative application of those technologies in current musical performance or sonic installations. The research includes a historical and theoretical perspective.

Musical Content: Chordify allows users to upload or link to recordings and analyze the chord structure. This works for all genres, including classical music. The chords are displayed in text form, and you can follow the chord changes through the piece while your original file plays. Other information: When using Chordify, educators should double-check the chords. Files with extra sounds (such as applause) can cause the program to add extraneous chords, and suspensions/inversions are not written out. This resource is still helpful for score analysis, and even for choral directors with limited keyboard proficiency. Chord changes can be written in to concert music to allow for a simpler harmonic accompaniment when teaching.

There was a time when music techniques and sounds were somewhat unique to an individual or group. With the technology that exists today, it is almost impossible to keep anything a secret for long. Along with that technology, though, comes the opportunity to create virtually anything one sets one's mind to.

Choralia offers part rehearsal tracks for a wide selection of choral repertoire. Most of it is Baroque/Classical/Romantic era rep, but there is a good selection of newer works as well (Gjeilo, Lauridsen, Rutter). Sound quality is a little funky, but they do the job.

There is a large amount of sounds available and the sounds are of high quality. It is very simple to use and students can start composing right away using this site.

The purpose of iReal Pro is to provide a simple yet high-quality practice resource for musicians. The application creates a customizable and realistic sounding accompanying tracks especially useful for practicing improvisation or jazz standards. Chord charts are used to create backing tracks in a variety of musical styles which can be transposed at the push of a button. The application is inexpensive and can be used on all mobile devices and on Mac OS. Currently it is not available for Windows (but can be used on android devices).

Noteflight provides music notation software from the ease of a web browser. The program is free to use, and although there is a premium version, the free version has all the tools needed for learning and creating notated music. All works are saved in the cloud and can be accessed at anytime from any device that can access the website, making music composition easier than ever.

It also connects to MIDI instruments. Noteflight has a paid subscription which allows you to store unlimited compositions, full access to all sounds, transposition, and the ability to print individual parts. Student accounts can be purchased which you to create "closed" classrooms allowing for creative musical products and collaboration amongst peers.

Audacity is an audio editing tool used to alter recordings and export them into various formats. Used as an educational tool students are able to record, edit, and add digital effects to recordings to remix or compose creative musical products. Music educators may also find it valuable for editing recordings of performances or demonstrating the properties of sound. Similar to Soundtrap.com; this online DAW is a great resource for student to create music with loops. I've used this in a technology class and students enjoy the variety of loops.

Soundation is a fully functioning cloud-based DAW, similar to Soundtrap. The look is darker and more professional, and the effects processing is more sophisticated. This could be a good option for college-level recording and collaboration, whereas Soundtrap's colorful look and simplicity would be more appropriate for middle- and high-school use.

Soundation is a Digital Audio Workstation similar to sound trap though soundation appears more professional, and the effects are more sophisticated. With soundation, students learn to do recording, editing, mixing, instrument patches, and MIDI input. Soundation is good for university level whereas Soundtrap's simplicity is good for middle and high school. Like soundtrap, it has a free one month trial with limited accessibility and to access the full premium, one has to pay. Soundation helps students acquire the 4Cs i.e Collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. It is a good resource for teaching studio composition and for enhancing the musicianship of non traditional music students.

I use this website with my beginning bands when they are first starting to pick what instrument they want to play. It categorizes instruments by family and gives a brief description of each with a sound clip. There are strings, percussion, woodwinds, and brass. The woodwind section is missing tenor and bari sax, and the brass section is missing euphonium but otherwise it is quite complete. I usually show this while having the actual instrument out.
