    Tonal Energy provides individualized instruction and videos for band and orchestra students. Each instrument is listed and linked to a fingering chart, exercises, scales, instrument care, and videos of professional artists. The website also has a place for discussion between other musicians, teachers, and students. One of the best items about Tonal Energy is the tuner App. The TE Tuner provides a visual representation beyond the original needle and shows the students proper intonation through a smiley face and colored circles.

  • First, the player must be aware of and be able to correct pitch discrepancy. The second step is to become aware of the intonation challenges of their own particular instrument. Finally, the player must be able to hear their pitch in relation to the various timbre and octaves in the ensemble.

    The online metronome is great when your handheld metronome dies. This metronome can be used in a classroom, during private instructions and at home. The metronome has a range of 40 bpm to 208 bpm with present intervals. Tempo descriptors (Largo through Prestissimo) are provided for the piece that do not provide the exact beats per minute. A4 at 440Hz is also provided.

    This free online metronome proves handy for in-class rehearsals and other applications, in classrooms with students of all ages. User can easily set the tempo using the dial and the steady beat will continue until stopped. It also features tempo markings on the dial for ease of use.     The purpose of this site is to allow music students to practice with a metronome. This site could also be played over a loud system in the classroom, so that an ensemble could play along to the beat and keep a steady tempo.     This site has a lot of free sheet music and allows students to print it off and practice sight reading. This site also has a tuner, scales, and a metronome to allow students to practice properly. The purpose of this resource is to allow students to stay engaged and practice music of their choice when they get bored with the music for concerts. This helps them stay engaged and not get burned out.

Any music teacher knows how frequently students ask for specific tunes from television or movies. Even though they may not be played in class, students can greatly benefit from private practice on tunes they enjoy. 8notes.com also includes over forty theory lessons. These lessons begin with learning about lines and spaces on the staff and continue through many concepts all the way to the introduction of modes. In addition to the lessons, this website provides ear training exercises to accompany the theory lessons. 8notes.com is a great resource for all music teachers, not just instrumental or vocal. This site includes music and lessons for all instruments including banjo and ukulele, making it great for a general music classroom as well.

A paid subscription allows teachers to create online classrooms for assigning and assessing work, and have access to the entire SmartMusic catalog.

    SmartMusic is a fantastic subscription based software that can be purchased by schools to assist with lesson book and repertoire study. I have used it with my students and our sight reading skills have been tremendously better. We have also performed better at adjudications due to the amount of sight reading exercises available.
