This YouTube video is a series of 18 recorder lessons which progress through the different pitches played on the recorder. There is a visual demonstration of each note as well as the notation on the staff. Background accompaniment is also a part of the video.

This website deals with all things related to the saxophone. There are links on this page for many articles. Some information is geared towards beginners (such as reading notes and how to hold the instrument). Other information is geared toward more advanced players (such as improv and even changing pads/neck cork).

"What is Jazz?" is a four-part lecture about jazz by Dr. Billy Taylor presented at the John F. Kennedy Center. Dr. Bill Taylor is a noted jazz pianist, historian, and educator. His four-part lecture dives into the history of jazz and the most important moments of jazz history. The first lecture centers around the origins of jazz in the African-American experience of slavery to the civil rights movement. This lecture explores the development of repertoire and techniques used in jazz performance. The second lecture discusses the techniques and traditions of jazz improvisation. The third lecture discusses the evolution of swing and rhythm/harmony with the inclusion of examples by a piano. The fourth lecture discusses the role of jazz in American culture and history, as well as the impact it has had on the world. 

This is a site where students can hear radio shows from the station of the same name as the site, hear instruments demonstrations, play musical games, and review terms from a musical dictionary. Teachers can also benefit from this site by taking advantage of its lesson plans and other teaching resources.

Great website for elementary music class. Easy to understand composer biographies, good music, fun games and a wonderful way to access classical music information.

Classics for Kids is a site that allows children to further learn about composers, music, play games that reinforce rhythms, note names, and improvisation.

A video that describes how to read music and breaks down the musical foundation of notation. Kid-friendly and a great introduction to note reading. 

These clinic notes are a great reference for implementing the new National Arts Standards. This handout has numerous websites and articles for responding, creating and performing music with technology.

The woodwind fingering guide is the best resource for finding specific fingering charts for every woodwind instrument.  The woodwind fingering guide provides multiple fingerings for every note and specific fingering charts for every instrument relating to alternate fingerings, trill fingerings, and other extended techniques.  This resource is excellent for students who are starting a new instrument or wish to learn new notes.

This site has in depth fingering charts for each woodwind instrument. There are handy trill and tremolo fingerings. Also, there are alternate fingerings when pitch issues need to be corrected. This is not an updated site or pretty by any means, but it gets the job done and is a good resource for instrumental teachers.

This website provides many flash card music theory quizzes that can be projected on a white board. It has topics ranging all the way from note identification to inverted chords with roman numerals.

Notes on works (not a ton), recordings, some analysis, tie-ins to standards

This is another Orchestra-sponsored website with fun activities for kids. It can be used during spare time, or units could be developed around it. The game I found which I liked in particular is called "Beethoven's Baseball". You get to pick your composer team, and then click on Beethoven to throw the "pitches", which are questions. The game keeps your score and is interactive. The website also has a "listen by composer" section, as well as other instructions for activities including making your own instrument.

This site provides insight on instrument timbres, symbol and note recognition, reinforce knowledge on composers, and more! In terms of composers, this site covers composers from as early as the Renaissance era to present.

Dallas Symphony Orchestra's website specifically for kids. Provides games, activities, and several listening examples. Can be used at home or in the classroom.

Vic Firth's education resources include videos on all things percussion related.  There are video and audio clips regarding beginning snare drum/mallets, drum set, rudiments, concert percussion, and marching/world percussion.  This is a great resource for teachers and students.

Purpose of this resource: This website contains many educational videos, articles, and resources for educators and students about percussion playing technique and history. Musical Content: The Vic Firth Educator page contains fundamental playing technique for snare drum, keyboard percussion and drum set as well as demonstration videos, articles, and sequential playing exercises. There are also videos about instrument set up and maintenance. Other information: The resources on this page are geared toward both educator and student. Many of the music reading articles and exercises are also applicable to non-percussionists and can be readily adapted for classroom use.

Aside from quality percussion equipment, Vic Firth provides a wealth of information on percussion education. The site includes videos, articles, and pdf's of exercises as well if needed.

Ear training website with exercises to help improve ear training. Various exercises and categories provide good opportunities for practice and developments.

This is a simple, yet effective free online interactive software for ear training. It offers practice tools in: intervals, chords, scales, chord progressions, perfect pitch, scale degrees (functional), intervals in context, an melodic dictation.

This website is perfect for listening exercises. The interval practice was very appropriate and the difficulty can even be adjusted based on the level of the student. I would like to use this site with my after-school chorus.

This is an online magazine for all things surrounding choirs and choral activity. Articles and resources include not only performance notes and pieces, but resources on vocal health and structure. User and site submitted articles give this website a variety of input and source material.

This is a list of SmartBoard programs applicable to music, organized by a teacher in Plattsburgh, NY. These activities are mostly aimed at K-5th students, but they are all very good resources. Note that clicking a resource takes you to that resources page, not the schools.

Practice Spot offers free downloads, tools, and also items for purchase. Some of the free downloads include manuscript paper and music note reading worksheets. There is also a rhythm generator within the website to help with sight-reading practice. The website also includes articles about practice and downloadable certificates for congratulating students who completed some of the programs available. This is an excellent resource for helping students in and out of class.

A program that is built from the teacher's perspective, Music Prodigy provides students with an area to practice, using a built-in metronome.  Assessment is also available in this program.  As its name implies, you will build musical prodigies.

This is an entertaining and educational video from Ted Talk. Famous singer and songwriter Bobby McFerrin uses the crowd to improvise a pentatonic scale. This is only a small clip from the event "Notes and Neurons: In Search of the Common Chorus" from the World Science Festival.

MusicTheory.net is a great website to teach theory to students. It has lessons on a variety of topics, interactive exercises to support the theory topics, and tools that could be used in conjunction with other activities in the classroom. There are also apps available for devices. The best part is that the exercises can be customized (scroll down to the bottom of the exercise or tools pages) with a permanent link so that students can take quizzes or have additional practice for specifics without having to change the settings for themselves. For example, note identification can be customized to the clef and range of a specific instrument and sent to those students for practice or quizzes.
