The purpose of this site is to provide access to information about the school where I teach general music, band and choir. It includes the developing school website and helpful links for our students. Google classroom links and other connections are coming soon.

This website is a great resource for band students to better understand note names, fingerings, and musical terms.  It is structured as a flash card game.  Students are racing to get all answers correct and into the Top 50.  If students answer incorrectly, the correct answer is shown to help students learn the correct answer. Students must answer all questions correctly in a certain time to move on to the next level.

This website is speed game for reinforcing terms, note names, or fingerings for students. It can be specialized to different instruments and has an option for teachers to keep track of scores by school.

Music racer is a tool to help users practice their note names and/or fingerings. Users select which instrument they would like to practice, and are given eight questions per round. Scoring is based on both speed and accuracy.

This website has resources for beginning strings and band. All the pieces have easy music patterns that are suitable for beginning players but are arranged in styles that are exciting and motivating to practice. This would be a good place to look for music for a beginning group's first concert. 

The purpose of this site is to provide loyalty free music samples to use in a variety of applications. It includes free samples of a wide variety of genres, moods and even premium tracks that can be purchased. It is a great resource for student projects where students can avoid copyright infringement. It is great for podcasts, videos, commercials, etc.

An interactive website for students to experiment learning and listening to songs, learn and play a conducting game, and compose. Great for individual computer time.

The San Francisco Symphony's purpose in creating this site was to compile a variety of interactive games and resources for kids to access and explore orchestral instrumentation and sound. There are engaging music activities for all ages and a calendar of events for live exploration and learning.

Dictionary of musical terms. Students could bookmark this page on their chromebooks and have access to it anytime.

This website hosts over 9,000 choral/vocal scores, texts, translations and other useful information. This is a fantastic resource for choral directors to browse and select music from.

Musical Content: The Choral Public Domain Library contains digital downloads (sheet music, midi files, and notation files) for choral works that are in the public domain. There is a large selection, and CPDL offers useful search features such as listing all musical settings of a text, searching by language, type of piece, and by musical era. Other information: This is a good resource for directors who do not have large music budgets, are looking to find different settings of specific texts, or are looking for music from a specific time period.

Great pinterest page that lists great ideas for orchestra directors. This is a cool resource to gain some outside the box ideas for string teaching. Includes everything from Star Wars activities to Minecraft string parts.

Ways to get a 'giving Bach' organization started with your own ensemble. Although it does not help with curricular topics, it still provides a valuable resource for any teacher.

This is a website companion to the keeping score series from the San Francisco Symphony. It provides great resources on the various pieces of classical music and their composers. Great resource for music history and appreciation.

A great resource from the NY Philharmonic. Being able to see the notes that all the great conductors have made on the scores, and embrace the history of this orchestra has been a lot of fun. Also helps a lot with score study and analysis of some of the major works for orchestra.

This is the Digital Archives from the New York Philharmonic. This has copies of past programs as well as digital copies of scores owned by the Phil. The scores also have the markings from the past conductors of the Phil.

Great source for a wide range of quizzes. There are a lot of options ranging from learning different instruments, note identification, rhythm practice, musician quizzes and more. There are lots of fun games that kids really enjoy.

Great resource for music history. With a new audio show being posted every week and past shows being available, there is a lot available and will continue to be available. Has short audio to keep children's attention and has an accompanying worksheet to help facilitate optimal listening and understanding.

Free podcasts available online, also on iTunes, to learn how to play jazz piano. There are a lot of episodes and it starts simple and easy before it gets a bit more advanced. There's an easy progression of increasing difficulty. These podcasts are a great resource for students and teachers for increasing their jazz piano abilities.

Some great tips for teaching songwriting on this teaching post. The post includes a detailed lesson plan with a step-by-step sequence. The lesson includes brainstorming tips, lyric writing, rhyming, and music composition. It also suggests incorporating technology to record and playback your collaborative creations.

The Smithsonian Folkways website offers lesson plans and recordings pertaining to world music. Using the map tool, teachers can select a region and view a PDF lesson plan (primarily for upper elementary, middle, and high school levels) and links to tracks for purchase or streaming. The site also includes information about professional development and interactive features, such as a jazz mixer and "Meet the Mariachi."

Smithsonian Folkways is the record label of the Smithsonian Institute. Website includes free resources for the classroom including lesson plans, courses for teachers, and additional resources including thousands of recordings.

This web is an excellent resource to study and practice music theory. Advanced students, college students and professional musicians can take tutorials in reading music, scales, harmonic functions, intervals, chords and musical forms. After taking the tutorials there are exercises available to practice. The annual membership is only $20. The web is available in english and spanish.

Marching band is something that a lot of people have to do, but not everyone has great experience as a marching director. This site provides a free podcast put together by some of the prolific minds in the marching band and drum corps world to help give ideas and provide strategies for improving public school programs.
