This interactive game helps students understand the layout of an orchestra, the ranges of the individual instruments, and how they sound individually and together in an ensemble. This is an excellent tool for elementary music!

This website offers an enormous quantity of material propaedeutical to learning jazz music and all its different aspects. Scales, ear training, chords, chord progressions, chord substitutions, jazz repertoire. A premium membership is available in order to access upgraded features.

Viola Online is a website devoted to the viola. It includes information about viola basics, such as how to set up the viola and start playing the viola, viola fingering charts, viola care, viola practice tips, how to read music, and much more. It also has free sheet music for the viola and exercises specifically for the viola. Finally, it offers a string class that discusses string music throughout history. It is a similar structure to Violin Online, with slight variations in what is offered for the instrument.

8note Recorder is a great website that has free recorder music listed by difficulty and categories. It is an easy website to navigate and can provide great enrichment music for those schools that use recorder stations in the classroom. It is especially helpful if your students have one-on-one technology to use where they play the recorder.

A great resource for music advocacy as well as how other teachers are promotting their programs for the overall development for their students. Music Matters is a foundation that provides funding to schools who are in danger of losing their programs or need assistance in raising funds for their programs.

This site offers resources about the current state of music education as well as useful articles about music advocacy. The purpose of this site is to inform people about the importance of music eduction and keep them updated about the important events happening today that may change the state of music education. My school district was actually recognized as one of the districts to receive "Best Community for Music Education" by NAMM. Not only is this site useful for music educators, but it also has articles about the role of community members and administrators in advocating for music education.

NAMM (National Association for Music Merchants) is a leader in music education. Their trade show every year draws the most important music companies from around the world. NAMM helps music education by providing a place for music educators to learn about the innovations and products available to them. Their website offers grant opportunities for teachers, and information for parents.

Music Learning Community is a site for music educators and music students that includes a great deal of information on computer-based learning. Included are games and activities that teach theory and build aural skills. There is a free trial but the site requires a membership fee.

Designed to make learning musical concepts and take-home assignments more fun and engaging, these games are broken down into various levels for students. Lower levels can be effective for early elementary students, and higher levels can be effective for students in high school. The Kidzone by the New York Philharmonic is an interactive website for children to use to learn primarily about instruments, composers, and famous musicians. It includes games, videos, audio recordings, and text. Students can interact with games that allow them to match rhythms, sort instruments into families, build an instrument, create a graphic-based composition, and match instruments and composers. There is also information about children's concerts.

This is an awesome resource that's student-friendly and focuses on instruments of the orchestra, as well as composers. It creates a strong connection between concept and real-world scenarios. The website is designed around the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. There are engaging and interactive games and lessons for students to learn about the orchestra and test their knowledge.

Very engaging and visually appealing website from the New York Philharmonic. Unfortunately many of the links would not work; however, one really cool feature is that there are recordings of symphony performances that can be viewed in a classroom. Much better quality of video than many available videos on YouTube.

Teoria is a Music Theory website (similar to musictheory.com) that offers step-by-step instructions on a wide variety of music theory concepts. The quizzes are helpful in assessing students in their understanding of theory concepts and allow the teacher to edit the types of questions on the quiz, the time limits, and the opportunity to correct the answers.

This website is a great tool for students to work on their music theory and ear training skills. Students can work individually on this website to complete different exercises and review music theory concepts.

This site includes scale sheets, rhythm charts and bowing examples for orchestra students and teachers.  I have used this site with my school students and private students.

This string specific website has lots of great resources for working on different skill-sets. I particularly like this for the finger pattern exercises and rhythmic reading tunes. This helps to work on rhythm, intonation, sight-reading, and scale work.

SmartMusic has interactive, web-based editions of many popular instrumental, band, chorus, and orchestra method books, as well as a massive collection of sheet music. Students can listen, loop, record and submit pieces they are working on. A neat feature of SmartMusic is that students can click on a single note and hear how it is supposed to sound, and how to finger that note on their instrument. Students can adjust tempo, play with a metronome, use a tuner to check pitch, and more. A paid subscription allows teachers to create online classrooms for assigning and assessing work, and have access to the entire SmartMusic catalog.

SmartMusic is music learning software for music teachers and students. It makes music learning easy and fun. Students can continue their learning outside school. Teachers can also assess students outside the school wall. Smart music is good for rehearsals because a student can rehearse at home when the teacher is listening in and correcting him/her from anywhere else. It is easy to access and a good resource for music classes.

Educators can reference this resource often to make sure that their planning and activities align with these standards.
