Article written to support the use of technology to compliment instruction and enhance student learning instead of technology for technology sake. Teachers should use social media cites, e.g., blogs, to facilitate discussion and feedback from students, create online PLNs. The cross curricular benefit is increasing writing facility and literacy. A couple of concerns are cyberbullying and parents who may question how much learning is taking place with social media. Educators can help others, including students, understand that music learning can take place outside of the classroom through social media and broaden the audience.

The Cool Cat Teacher Blog is written maintained by educator, Vicki Davis. Her mission is to keep teachers inspired and motivated. This is not specifically a music education resource, but the information contained on the blog can be helpful for teachers of any subject area. I am specifically interested in the aspect of Social Media and the Classroom.

This site is the home to Huei-Yuan Pan - one the most influential marching percussion education specialists in the United States. The site offers media, lessons, sheet music, and links to Huei's educational social media pages

This program allows for MIDI input, traditional computer notation input, and also translates live music performance into notation. The online features of this program allow for sharing of files with others through email and social media. ScoreCloud is downloadable as a computer program and application for IOS devices. This program could be used to help teach music creativity, music literacy, and music response.

Tagboard is a whole new way to experience the great content from the social networks you already know and love. Each tagboard is a collection of social media posts (from Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and others) that share a common hashtag. Tagboards can be embedded on websites, integrated in to mobile apps, and shown on large displays.

Doug Butchy complies a collection of music education related online resources distributed daily. He draws from blogs, Twitter and other social media sites to collect this information. His collection of links is a great starting point for daily reading.

Pinterest is a social media site where many different users share different ideas on all different topics. There are many great music education resources found here. Links to blogs, podcasts, and wikis are very helpful.

Rhett Price is using social media to advertise and support his record.  He only used a laptop to start his videos.  What a great story and great way to use technology!

DonorsChoose is a great place to start looking for additional aid for your classroom. You can pose a project that you need funding for, if its more instruments, books, materials, and/or other resources that you may need, but can't get your district to obtain. It is very easy to use and you create a project where people can find or search and donate their own money to fund. You can have several people donate and you can share your proposal on various forms of social media to help spread the word. The choral teacher and I did a few projects and we were able to get Orff Instruments, Drums, and even Ipods for the kids. You have to follow up with DonorsChoose and send photos and thank you letters from the students to show how you are using the materials in the classroom. It is a perfect way to receive that additional funding for your program.

DonorsChoose is a miracle for programs with little to no budget. You can create an account as an educator and create projects that go towards your classroom. You can ask for anything from Chromebooks to instruments and sheet music. Donors from all over the world can donate and support your classroom. This is the resource that helped me build my band program.

The College Band Directors National Association is a very reputable source of information about everything music education, especially in terms of band. Through publication of their journal and social media accounts, there is a constant source of information about teaching resources for the band music classroom, and they have an entire committee dedicated to technology in music education.
