There are two ways to access applications on a mobile device. The first is to simply fire up the mobile Web browser and load a Web application. Existing Web sites are designed for mouse interaction. Mobile interaction is with the finger, thus most Web sites need to be optimized for the mobile Web.

ScanLife’s Q3 Trend Report showed a 440 percent increase in scans year-over-year from the third quarter of 2010, indicating consumers are more willing to interact and engage with content delivered through QR codes.

reveals that more than 20 million scans have been recorded through the quarter. 

It posts regular usage updates, and its latest shows QR code scanning in Q2 was up by 39 per cent on Q1, with 1D barcode scanning up 41 per cent.

When they perform a scan, they are provided with a trivia question or a task that must be completed. Each time they answer correctly or finish the required activity, they gain points. Those can be accumulated in order to earn prizes.

Giving the consumer an option to scan a QR code which leads them to a website that is not optimized for the device they use to scan it is like sending someone with a broken arm in to get a full-body physical. People use QR codes to take action directly, so don’t make them jump through hoops, pinching, zooming and navigating through a messy desktop site. Give them what they want: a mobile experience.

the QR codes that perform far better are the ones that offer consumers a benefit for scanning.  This means providing a discount, special offer or inclusion in some sort of exclusive program in order to provide customers a return on investment for their time. Of course, clever marketers can find plenty of ways to provide a reward for scanning while still integrating plenty of branding as well.

When customers scan the QR code, according to Mobile Commerce Daily, they’ll be taken to a Johnny Rockets’ mobile-friendly landing page where they’ll be asked to provide their name, address, city, state, zip code, and the location of the Johnny Rockets they go to the most.

They’ve placed the QR codes on table tents in their restaurants, which gives consumers ample time to scan them with their phones.

QR codes have been misused and overused lately, but the fact remains that they are a great way to link the printed world with the digital one. Once a PDF document is printed, all the functionality of its hyperlinks are lost, but a QR code can bring a print reader right back to the web.

Why are U.S. retailers slow to adopt NFC payment technology? One reason is the expense and effort required to install NFC-enabled point-of-sale equipment in stores and to integrate it with merchants' systems.

It's a bit of a chicken-and-egg dynamic: Retailers typically don't invest in offering a new payment option until they see widespread consumer demand; but few consumers are likely to prefer a payment option that's not yet widely accepted.

Pew also found that 53 percent of Americans who use their phones to go online do so at least once per day. That's more than 47 million daily mobile internet users in the U.S.

Age matters. About 65 percent of U.S. cell phone users ages 18-29 go online from their phones, compared with 43 percent of those aged 30-49.
