Number booklet coverDuring April 2008 Brombacher and Associates ran a four-day workshop for FET College lecturers on the assessment and remediation of the pre-requisite knowledge and skills assumed to be necessary for students to be able to study Mathematical Literacy. The workshop, presented by Aarnout Brombacher and Marc North,was attended by one lecturer from each of the 50 FET Colleges. The workshop focussed on the use of pre-tests to determine the knowledge and skills that college students have at the start of the programme and on the teaching of the necessary knowledge and skills in those cases where the students do not have these. InBalance has been been developed by a team of European research and learning institutions.The purpose of the project is to support and develop adult tutors of numeracy and provide structured and engaging materials for learners of several abilities. InBalance is a realistic & systematic methodology based on the needs of individual learners & their practical everyday experiences.The InBalance website presents you with a European Numeracy Framework. It describes in detail European levels of competence in numeracy relating to real life situations. There is also a bank of learning materials & an assessment tool for you to use with your own learners; and an exercise maker which will assist you to create your own learning materials.

Mathematics is used in interesting, and often less than accurate, ways. Newspapers present graphs showing apparently correlated variables, but with a little thought, some of the time you will find that whilst it looks like two variables are connected, there is actually no cause and effect. Sometimes this is because there is a third factor causing the movements in the variables - for example, if it is hot and sunny, sales of sunscreen lotion increase, as do sales of air-conditioners. If you plot these sales against each other, you find a correlation. However, they are only connected because of a third variable, the summer weather. Of course, an unscrupulous media can draw connections where they don't exist for more political ends, such as blaming an increase in crime on the sales of hooded sweatshirts. And politicians have been known to confuse cause and effect, thinking that a local crime increase is due to the increased police presence, rather than the other way around.

Students will investigate the field of architecture as a career choice, with specific research into the use of geometric shapes (polygons) in building design and construction. In the first part of the project the students will use a digital camera to record examples of the use of polygons in building design in their communities. They will present their findings to the class using a PowerPoint slide show. In the second they complete a drawing of a building as per the instructions in the Explain and Elaborate section

This problem presents students with a "which-is-thebest-buy" scenario involving admission to an amusement park. Students choose between four different admission rates, and then must justify why they selected the rate that they did.

This could be a great tool to use with students in the clasrrom. They can research their won dataset and visualise it.
