Great resource for Arnot www.brombacher.co.za for mathematical literacy. During April 2008 Brombacher and Associates ran a four-day workshop for FET College lecturers on the assessment and remediation of the pre-requisite knowledge and skills assumed to be necessary for students to be able to study Mathematical Literacy. The workshop was presented by Aarnout Brombacher and Marc North. It focussed on the use of pre-tests to determine the knowledge and skills that college students have at the start of the programme and on the teaching of the necessary knowledge and skills in those cases where the students do not have these.

This lesson focuses on money as something you either own or owe. The lesson is organised around the context of earning an income and includes the principal message that good money management can create security and help a person work towards their future dreams. By the end of this lesson, learners will know/be able to:\n-discuss the role of money in their dream/plan for the future;\n-understand that money can be owned (+) or owed (-);\n-discuss ways of generating an income;\n-calculate basic percentages.

As we all have heard, the laptop for teachers project of the DoE has now been officially been gazetted. Teachers are to get an allowance of R130 per month to subsidise the aquisition of the laptop over a 5 year period. I think this would make a GREAT excercise to work out just how vaible this innitiative is. This document gives the background to the project. I am looking forward to a great lessonplan!!!????
