Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, have now genetically engineered a strain of mice whose FOXP2 gene has been swapped out for the human version. In a region of the brain called the basal ganglia, known in people to be involved in language, the humanized mice grew nerve cells that had a more complex structure. Baby mice utter ultrasonic whistles when removed from their mothers. The humanized baby mice, when isolated, made whistles that had a slightly lower pitch, among other differences, Dr. Enard says. Dr. Enard argues that putting significant human genes into mice is the only feasible way of exploring the essential differences between people and chimps, our closest living relatives.

Stanford Humanities Fellow Edith Sheffer had an idea of how she could personalize history for her students. This led to an innovative use of the wiki. The following are highlights from a conversation in January 2009 about her course "Germany and the World Wars, 1870-1990.″. The idea was to have a writing assignment that would function like weekly response papers but be slightly more interesting to the students. Each student would create his or her own character that was born in 1900 and be in complete control of their persona. Beyond the initial introductory sentence that gave their parent's occupation, and birthplace and gender, they could make life choices.

VideoAnt is an online video annotation tool created by the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Minnesota. It allows users to make time-line based textual comments in synchronization with online video. It's an ideal tool for providing feedback or facilitating peer reviews.

The Spanish FrameNet Project is creating an online lexical resource for Spanish, based on frame semantics and supported by corpus evidence. The "starter lexicon" is available to the public, and contains more than 1,000 lexical items (verbs, predicative nouns, and adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and entities) representative of a wide range of semantic domains. The aim is to document the range of semantic and syntactic combinatory possibilities (valences) of each word in each of its senses, through: * human approved and automatic annotated example sentences and * automatic capture and organization of the annotation results. The Spanish FrameNet database will be in a platform-independent format, and it is able to be displayed and queried via the web and other interfaces.

"The Academy welcomes emerging as well as established scholars, writers, and professionals who wish to engage in independent study in Berlin. Around two dozen Berlin Prizes are conferred annually. Past Berlin Prize recipients have included historians, economists, poets, art historians, journalists, legal scholars, anthropologists, musicologists, public policy experts, and writers, among others. The Academy does not accept project proposals in mathematics and the hard sciences. Fellowships are typically awarded for an academic semester or, in some cases, for an entire academic year. Only the Bosch Fellowships in Public Policy may be for shorter stays of six to eight weeks. Fellowship benefits include round-trip airfare, housing at the Academy, partial board, and a stipend of $5,000 per month."
