Cachexia and Wasting in the Elderly: Skeletal Muscle Atrophy: Link Between Reduced Protein Synthesis and Increased Protein Degradation: Eley & Tisdale, Journal of Biological Chemistry - 0 views

  •
Study provides the first evidence of a direct relationship between the depression of protein synthesis in skeletal muscle by PIF and Ang II, through activation of PKR, and eIF2{alpha} phosphorylation, and the enhanced degradation of the myofibrillar protein myosin, through activation of NF-{kappa}B resulting in an increased expression and activity of the ubiquitin-proteasome proteolytic pathway. This suggests that agents that target PKR may be effective in the treatment of muscle atrophy in cancer cachexia or other wasting conditions.

Effects of Pomegranate Juice Consumption on Myocardial Perfusion in Patients with Coronary Heart Disease - 0 views

  •
© 2005 Elsevier (Am J Cardiol 2005;96:810-814). After 3 months, the extent of stress-induced ischemia decreased in the pomegranate group but increased in the control group. This benefit was observed without changes in cardiac medications, blood sugar, hemoglobin A1c, weight, or blood pressure in either group. In conclusion, daily consumption of pomegranate juice may improve stress-induced myocardial ischemia in patients who have CHD. (Small sample; further study warranted with quantitative coronary arteriography + intravascular ultrasound.)
