Commentary: A Sense of Story, or Why Teach Reflective Writin... : Academic Medicine - 3 views

  •
"The duty of the teacher in this model is not to judge and rate but, rather, to read and tell what is seen. Our teachers, having been trained in the acts of close reading, are equipped not with rating rubrics but, rather, with a reading guide that prompts the reader to attend to several narrative features of a text. The reader/coach can thereby first see and then show the writer what is contained in the written text, at least from that reader's vantage point, helping along the process not only of the writing but also of the reflection the writing birthed. Multiple readers swell and complicate the lessons learned. As a dividend, we have observed, the group of readers/writers form strong, trusting, collaborative teams. And so our training for reflection also fulfills other difficult missions of medical education in teamwork, peer learning, trust, and care."

A systematic review of the effects of residency training on patient outcomes - 0 views

  •
Ninety-seven articles were included from 182 full-text articles of the initial 2,001 hits. All studies were of average or good quality and the majority had an observational study design.Ninety-six studies provided insight into the effect of 'the level of experience of residents' on patient outcomes during residency training. Within these studies, the start of the academic year was not without risk (five out of 19 studies), but individual progression of residents (seven studies) as well as progression through residency training (nine out of 10 studies) had a positive effect on patient outcomes.

Looking back to move forward: using history, disco... [Med Teach. 2013] - PubMed - NCBI - 0 views

  •
" In this AMEE guide we describe historical, discourse and text analysis approaches that can help researchers and educators question the inevitability of things that are currently seen as 'natural'. Why is such questioning important? By articulating our assumptions and interrogating the 'naturalness' of the status quo, one can then begin to ask why things are the way they are."

Purposeful Reading: The Extended 3 - 2 - 1 Process - 1 views

  •
The impact of the activity on learning, in my experience, far outweighs any concern about time required for the 3-2-1 processes. In one of my courses, I assigned 3-2-1 reports to the text chapters that I thought were the most difficult and which did not have any direct connection to the course lab activities.

Retrieval Practice Produces More Learning than Elaborative Studying with Concept Mappin... - 4 views

  •
Here, we show that practicing retrieval produces greater gains in meaningful learning than elaborative studying with concept mapping. The advantage of retrieval practice generalized across texts identical to those commonly found in science education. The advantage of retrieval practice was observed with test questions that assessed comprehension and required students to make inferences. The advantage of retrieval practice occurred even when the criterial test involved creating concept maps. Our findings support the theory that retrieval practice enhances learning by retrieval-specific mechanisms rather than by elaborative study processes. Retrieval practice is an effective tool to promote conceptual learning about science.
