Intrinsic motivation occurs when people engage in an activity without obvious external incentives. Intrinsic academic motivation has been shown to be related to better academic achievement in medical students. Extrinsic motivation refers to the desire to do something because it leads to a particular outcome.

Professionalism: The "good doctor" discussion - 2 views

  •
"Professionalism in medicine is, in essence, a conversation about what it means to be a good doctor. It has been a major topic of discussion in the field for many years and will likely remain so for years to come. Physicians still debate how to define it, how to assess it and how to teach it. Younger doctors sometimes have different ideas on what it means to be a professional than older colleagues. "

A systematic review of the effects of residency training on patient outcomes - 0 views

  •
Ninety-seven articles were included from 182 full-text articles of the initial 2,001 hits. All studies were of average or good quality and the majority had an observational study design.Ninety-six studies provided insight into the effect of 'the level of experience of residents' on patient outcomes during residency training. Within these studies, the start of the academic year was not without risk (five out of 19 studies), but individual progression of residents (seven studies) as well as progression through residency training (nine out of 10 studies) had a positive effect on patient outcomes.

"Most people instinctively avoid conflict, but as Margaret Heffernan shows us, good disagreement is central to progress. The feedback sanction. [Acad Emerg Med. 2000] - PubMed - NCBI - 1 views

  •
"Good feedback is a necessary condition for well-calibrated performance by individuals, and is integral to effective team function. More needs to be known about outcomes for feedback to work efficiently. The critical role of feedback in other aspects of ED function, such as education and human factors engineering, should be emphasized. The current interest in medical error and evolving attitudes toward a new culture of patient safety provide a unique opportunity to examine feedback and the critical role it plays in ED function."

Free mind mapping (and related types) software - Wikit - 4 views

  •
Mind-mapping.org has a good capability for selecting software by map type and operating system (click on the 'Refine software list' tab at the top right of its web page), and shows the price. Unfortunately, it doesn't allow you to filter on price or choose to see only the free ones. This article is therefore a quick list to current software that is free or has a free option. It excludes applications that have a time limit on their operation, for example, free trial software or web applications.

Welcome to MedMaps.co.uk - 1 views

  •
The purpose of this website is to create a collection of free medical mindmaps in order to facilitate learning of complex topics. Mindmaping is a way of incorporating imagery, colour, and visual-spatial arrangement to your notes. These elements have been separately shown to improve recall of learnt material. Mindmapping allows for the whole topic to be displayed on a single page, which increases revision speed and allows you to see connections between different ideas more easily. The difficulty in using mindmaps for revision is that it often takes a fair amount of time to design them and there are many topics to be covered in medicine. In preparation for exams, it would be very difficult for a student to make a good mindmap for every topic. One of the aims of this website is to help you overcome this problem.
