ELL 'Shadowing' Brings Instructional Gaps to Light - Education Week Teacher - 1 views

Having teachers experience "a day in the life of an ELL" can be powerful professional development-and at one school it's reportedly helped close the achievement gap. ELL 'Shadowing' Brings Instructional Gaps to Light, Liana Heitin (2011) Retrieved from http://www.edweek.org/tm/articles/2011/08/24/ell_shadowing.html Retrieved on 10/19/15 Great article with a fresh new idea!!!! This article tells the tale of "A teacher or administrator follows an English-language learner to several classes." I have "shadowed" in a classroom before, usually to observe the teacher. But the purpose of this shadowing is to look specifically at the student's use of academic language. Statistics show "English-language learners spend less than 2 percent of the school day improving their academic oral language." That number is completely unacceptable. I think we as teachers could all benefit from "shadowing" students. It does not have to just be ELL students we shadow. Reviewing data and becoming educated about the students who struggle would help with the shadowing process. Maybe we could start with shadowing the students who aren't improving in order to better understand why they are behind.

With this outline, you can track where students may have gotten lost in the lesson and you can use that data to adjust instructional needs. Using this lesson plan format allows a teacher to be well-informed about the content and student outcomes expected.

Phonics and Word Study for ELL's K-5 - 2 views

This is a great article found on ASCD that highlights the importance of word study and phonics instruction as part of Guided Reading instruction to build basic foundational skills for ELL students. This is a chapter found in the book "Research-Based Methods of Reading Instruction for English Language Learners, Grades K-4." I chose this article because it includes actual guided reading lessons for groups who are working on specific skills such as word endings, vowel combinations, blends, diagraphs etc. Linan-Thompson, S & Vaughn, S. Learning to Teach to Bridge the Achievement Gap - 2 views

How teachers are raising scores and student achievement by setting high expectations, frequent assessment and getting parents and families involved.

I really like the points that this article identifies in how teachers are closing the achievement gap. The main strategies that they are using are clearly helping students with their learning and understanding of the instruction. It is important to set high expectations for all students and to help students develop confidence in their learning. Through frequent assessment, we are able to monitor student growth and progress to identify what works for them and what needs to be improved. Parent involvement is also vital. Currently in my classroom, it is clear to me which parents are involved in their child's learning as it correlates to their child's performance. There needs to be a clear relationship and consistency between the two to maximize student success.

This is a great resource for technology integration. The sites listed are easily adaptable across subject areas. This would be a good tool for differentiation and for teaching to different learning styles. I particularly like the ReadWriteThink site and the Screencast-o-matic. The ReadWriteThink site allows students to demonstrate knowledge, and the Screencast-o-matic seems like a great tool to create sub plans!

This blog was very interesting and reminded me of tools I haven't looked at or thought to use in my classroom. I could see using Google Earth for students to have an interactive adventure through history. Also, I envisioned myself using the Screencast-o-matic, Quzziz, and Formative with my students.

With all the areas that children are taught in school, the author feels that while trying work at the achievement gap we should look at the engagement gap. The eagerness that children have a young age needs to be maintained. Hands-on learning should be implemented into the lesson.

This is a great article focusing on engagement in the classroom! It discusses the necessity of hands on learning to maintain students interest. This is important for students of all academic levels. Hands on learning not only engages students because they are "doing", they also are developing critical thinking skills. As a special education teacher, I know that in order to assist my students in learning, I need to keep their attention and provide them with interesting, hands on learning.

I love this article! I have always been a strong believer in hands on learning and I love that they call it an engagement gap! Students get bored when a teacher gets up and lectures them all day. They need to be engaged! The activities need to be purposeful and have a specific meaning but a teacher can make just about any topic engaging just by getting the kids moving and interacting. I 100% agree that students retain information longer when they are engaged and enjoying what they are learning.
