This is a great website for science videos, photographs and information for students and teachers to go through to find information. I love many of the videos you can look through to help make a lesson more concrete for students. However the videos are many and great they always start with advertisements which I do not like and think it takes away from the video. However if you look at the Kid version of National Geographic I did find they did not have advertisements before the video begins.

Love this site!! My dad works for National Geographic, so I get all of the kids magazines that go along with the site. My third grades love it!

This is a web-based tool that allows students to create virtual museum exhibits in 3-D cubes that can be manipulated to show connected information on each surface! This website, which houses a pay-to-use web tool, offers access for every teacher in a school and all of their students for $99.00 per year.

This seems very similar to Project Based Learning and I like how many examples they give of how to use this in specific classroom settings! Great resource! Thanks!

Suggestions for Assessment throughout the process of a PBL. Include links to multiple articles on different types of assessment and grade levels.

These lessons are common core based and gives teachers more of a performance task layout. The lessons have common core standards linked to them already making it easy to find aligned lessons quickly. Lessons are very detailed and teachers are provided with a key.

Personal relevance examples are given in order to make lessons and information meaningful for students. Personal connections to material will help retention of material as well as motivate student willingness to learn.

One thing that came to mind when I read this article was a technique of vocabulary instruction that my school has been using for the past few years. It is called the "Marzano" method of instruction (named after Robert Marzano) which asks students to give their own impression/explanation of a new term before it is used in class. I often like using this technique for vocabulary in Physics that has a contemporary meaning aside from how we will be using it in our course. One great example is "Resistance" in circuitry. I will ask the students (as per the Marzano method) to write down a description or explanation of this word, then I will go around and record the results from random students around the room. The 'group' consensus definitions are then combined to come up with the 'official' or 'technical' definition of the word. It's amazing to see how many students have odd connections to words that help explain the science meaning of the word. Once I had a student bring up the idea of resistance meaning a "rebellion" or "uprising" of sorts. In electrical terms that is not the 'true' definition, but having the students visualizing the electric conductor 'fighting back' against the electron flow can easily guide students to the more appropriate usage of the word. This way, students can see that these 'new' terms are ones that they already have an inkling of understanding for. Their understandings are not useless, but rather need to be expanded upon as we learn more about our content.

This seems a really excellent support for the PBL model of instruction - providing real-world context to the material of a class motivates learning, and allows students to activate prior knowledge. This website is an amazing tool. You can share files, documents, and even your screen with your group partner. ShowDocument allows teams to complete co-edits, use a whiteboard for brainstorming, view video clips, search web pages, and even utilize google maps. ShowDocument has a lot of collaborative web tools in once place. You have to pay for a membership to use chat translators and screen captures, but the basic tools are ideal for most group projects. This is a site that can put interactive links into a online photograph. I am going to have students create their own Thinglink when we begin reading "A House on Mango Street." This will serve as a mini research project. If that goes well, I will probably also use this tool with my theatre classes when the Tony nominations are announced- the students will make a Thinglink that captures the history of the awards and the current nominees. The students will be able to imbed video clips for many of the shows.

Google drive is a great online collaboration resource. I recently had the opportunity to participate in a training called "iPad pair share." At the training we collaborated with about 40 other educators through Google drive. Throughout the training we were able to write down our thoughts or questions on different online/iPad tools. This would be great tool for students to collaborate on class projects or assignments. The only problem with this is that you have to have an account, which requires all the students to have an account to use this.

Rich, We have started using Google Drive in our school and it has also been embraced countywide. It has really helped our teachers streamline forms and spreadsheets. It has also served as a great host for housing static information like our handbook and policies. Finally, the calendar option has made it a one stop shop for information. I am a fan of Google Drive, but like you said you need to have an account to use it.

PebbleGo is an early childhood research base for young children learning to read. Information is child friendly and includes many pictures and videos to enrich student learning. PebbleGo has a read aloud feature that allows text to be read to the audience, if necessary. It also has online games relating to topics on PebbleGo and printable resources. This resource requires login information and can be purchased as a subscription by an entire school.

Pebble Go is an excellent online resource for student reserach. This site is divided up by category of science, social studies, and biographies. Students use this interactive website to learn about different academic content areas. For each topic, readings, videos, games, and audio recordings are provided. This allows students of all ability levels to be able to access the information and understand the content. My students love this site as it is a great starting point for any reserach project!

The achievement gap can be lowered if children are engaged in high quality play and learning before beginning kindergarten.

Caryn, I really enjoyed this article. It thoughtfully portrayed the fact that the achievement gap often starts long before students ever have their first day of kindergarten. For students who are not read to as young children, or engaged in meaningful play and projects, the first few school years are dramatically more difficult. Victoria
