MaRS Innovation appoints Rafi Hofstein as President & CEO. June 1, 2009

The Graham Boeckh Foundation which focuses on improving the lives of those that suffer from mental illness has appointed James D. Hughes as President. The Graham Boeckh Foundation had a symposium on the "Next Frontier in Mental Health": From Research to Patients" that was held at the MaRS Centre on April 24.

Christine Wong, IT Business reported states "Geminare was granted the first ever patent for recovery-as-a-service cloud technology five long years after first developing it." Geist, President & CEO of Geminare has been involved in mentoring start-ups at MaRS. 

"Peter Robertson as Chair of the MEDEC Board of Directors. Peter Robertson is Vice President and General Manager of GE Healthcare Canada. Peter is also a member of the management board for MaRS' Excellence in Clinical Innovation and Technology Evaluation (""EXCITE"") program."

MaRS Discovery District is expanding. MaRS' Phase 2 development will be completed in 2013. Don Duval, Vice President of Advisory Services states " Our mandate is to work with early stage ventures and help these companies grow ... The program's success, he says, is measured by "the amount of jobs and wealth our companies notable successes.

"Ernst & Young has selected Michael Back, president and CEO, Collective Point of Sale Solutions Ltd., as an Ontario finalist in its prestigious Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year® 2012 Awards." Dr. Ilse Treurnicht, CEO, MaRS Discovery District is on the judging panel for the Entrepreneur of the Year.

Doug Friesen, President of Getinge Canada Limited a division of The Getinge, a leading, Swedish-based global medical company spoke at the MaRS Centre regarding financial challenges facing the healthcare system in Ontario.

The Society for Brain Mapping and Therapeutics (SBMT) announced today that the organization will hold its 9th Annual World Congress on Brain, Spinal Cord Mapping, and Image Guided Therapy from June 2-4, 2012 in Toronto, Canada. Parimal Nathwani, Vice President of MaRS Innovation, says"Forums like this represent an excellent opportunity for reviewing technologies and supporting collaboration across different institutions for more effective translation and commercialization opportunity."

Notable Canadians share the best advice or words of wisdom they received from their fathers such as Dr. David Naylor, President of the University of Toronto.

MaRS Innovation and The University of Toronto (U of T) announce that they have entered into an agreement to collaboratively commercialize a novel sustained release formulation of nitric oxide (NO) for applications in wound healing, including diabetic ulcers.

According to Tech Media Reports, "Sara Diamond, president of the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) says we should get on with the job of making this industry a veritable economic powerhouse. The future lies in "digital" pursuits." Mention of Net Change Week.

William Reichman, Baycrest President and CEO of Canada, announced the creation of a new company with MaRS, a center specializing in Canadian innovation. The new company, called Cogniciti will produce games and mental training protocols to beat the decline in memory with the help of high-tech games.

Paul Godfrey, president and CEO of the National Post, War Child Canada founder Dr. Samantha Nutt, and businessman Lawrence Bloomberg topped the list of 29 Canadians named to the Order of Ontario yesterday. Lawrence Bloomberg is also a Founder and Director of MaRS.

The Ontario Institute for Cancer Research in 2010 will grow its workforce, step up efforts to commercialize discoveries, and aim to fulfill research goals to be detailed in a second strategic plan set to be submitted next month to provincial officials, according to the institute's president and scientific director, Tom Hudson.

Dr. Tom Hudson, President and Scientific Director of the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) announced an investment of $1 million towards the development of two new promising cancer therapies. OncoTek Drug Delivery Inc (a subsidiary of Receptor Therapeutics) is one of the recipients.

Rafi Hofstein, President and CEO of MaRS Innovation is one of the inaugural Board of Directors for The Centre for Commercialization of Regenerative Medicine (CCRM). CCRM is a MaRS tenant.

On Nov 4, there was a presentation that took place at the MaRS Centre on Energy Storage Market. The session was moderated by Deloitte's director of research, Duncan Stewart. Other speakers were: Sankar Das Gupta, CEO of Toronto-based Electrovaya, Mark Tinkler, principal consultant of Emerging Energy Options, Kirk Washington, general partner at Yaletown Venture Partners, and Ken Rudisuela, president of Mobilogy Inc. The seminar focused on the importance of energy storage, not just to make renewable energy more practical, but also to reduce our dependency on carbon-based fuel, especially gasoline. Nov 5, 2009
