Doug Friesen, President of Getinge Canada Limited a division of The Getinge, a leading, Swedish-based global medical company spoke at the MaRS Centre regarding financial challenges facing the healthcare system in Ontario.

Canada has joined Australia, Finland, Ireland, India, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom in providing nationwide access to the Cochrane Library, a collection of evidence-based medicine reviews and a critical health sciences resource. The current pilot project, which runs through the end of 2009, allows all Canadian users to access the complete Cochrane collection from any computer in the country. The Canadian Health Libraries Association reports that almost 40,000 Canadians were denied access to a Cochrane systematic review in 2007.

The Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of International Trade, met with senior Swedish government officials and key business leaders to enhance business opportunities between the two countries and promote Canada-EU comprehensive economic and trade agreement negotiations. Minister Van Loan states, "Science and technology cooperation continues to be an important part of our commercial relationship, and we look forward to intensifying our bilateral partnership in this area, including at Canadian institutions such as the MaRS Centre at the University of Toronto, and the University of Calgary."

A Swedish delegation comes to the MaRS Centre to share it's country challenges when it comes to fostering economic development and innovation.

Canada is now a mid-level player in the global innovation race, passed by rising powers China and South Korea in some categories and falling further behind long-time rivals such as the United States, Germany, Norway and Sweden.
