The Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of International Trade, met with senior Swedish government officials and key business leaders to enhance business opportunities between the two countries and promote Canada-EU comprehensive economic and trade agreement negotiations. Minister Van Loan states, "Science and technology cooperation continues to be an important part of our commercial relationship, and we look forward to intensifying our bilateral partnership in this area, including at Canadian institutions such as the MaRS Centre at the University of Toronto, and the University of Calgary."

Hon. John Milloy, Minister of Research and Innovation and Minister of Training, Colleges and Univesities, states "Ontario has big expectations and goals for the life sciences industry and commercialization." MaRS is an innovation centre in Toronto.

Premier Dalton McGuinty designed the trade mission to Israel in part as a means of understanding Israel's success in nurturing innovation and attracting venture capital. Of 38 companies and organizations taking part in Ontario's six-day life sciences trade mission to Israel, only two are from Ottawa, and only one is a local business. MaRS Innovation, an agency devoted to commercializing research from 14 Toronto academic institutions, has strengthened linkages in Toronto.

The event will be held at the MaRS Centre on April 24, 2012.

According to Theresa Boyle, Health Report of The Star, states that scientists have discovered the process that underlies in the development of cancer cell mutations in breast cancer. Mike Stratton who is part of the International Cancer Genome Consortium at the MaRS Centre states these "findings will go a long way in helping the consortium achieve its goal of mapping the genetic mutations in 50 different types of cancer by 2018."

According to Ben Coxworth, reporter, at Gizmag states the University of Toronto has developed a "microfluidic device ... that can reportedly produce sections of precisely-engineered tissue that measure within the centimeters. This innovation is currently being commercialized by MaRS Innovation.

This round of financing builds on a $2.2 million seed round raised in 2010, led by MaRS Innovation.

Canadian Researchers from Princess Margaret Cancer Program found a potential new leukemia treatment with an old antibiotic drug. MaRS Innovation partly assisting funding the research.
