On Wednesday, Dec 2, 2009 Buzz Aldrin, Apollo 11 astronaut, will speak about the bold new future of aging to about 200 international researchers, experts on geriatrics and people who work with the elderly. Toronto's Baycrest centre is staking a claim to a piece of the booming brain fitness market with a new company, Cogniciti, and a new generation of brain games aimed at helping baby boomers keep their minds sharp and boost their productivity in the workplace well into old age. Alvaro Fernandez, a researcher on aging, says the new games are designed to keep older brains nimble. Hon. Milloy states "The McGuinty government is proud to support the work that both MaRS and Baycrest are doing to improve quality of life and tackle the challenges of an aging population. Ontario is supporting innovators across the province to ensure this kind of success is the rule, not the exception." Dec 2, 2009

The aging population wants to reverse the aging process. The global market for products ranging from skin renewal to brain games is already worth $160 billion a year and is expected to rise to $275 billion in 2013.Cogniciti is a profit organization that will launch a new generation of brain games to help boomers keep their minds sharp and boost productivity well into old age.

Seniors are staying healthier and living longer. Dr. Jane Barratt, secretary general of the International Federation on Aging, believes only one in seven seniors needs to live in a long-term care facility. Even some quite frail elderly people can and should remain independent in their homes. A conference Tuesday and Wednesday at the MaRS Centre in Toronto explored the business of aging and looked at public policy solutions to issues such as brain health, health care and pensions. Canadians want to remain in their homes as they age, and that could mean a motherlode for entrepreneurs.
