Networking promotes archival interest, says satisfied National Media Museum The National Media Museum has praised its collaboration with Flickr, which saw the UK institution make some of its photographic collections freely available online. Initially launched by the US Library of Congress and Flickr in January 2008, the project, dubbed The Commons, aims to give the public easier access to thousands of archived photographs while helping the library categorise them through Flickr's photo- tagging system, in effect harnessing the power of social networks.

World is Witness, a new "geoblog" from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum's Genocide Prevention Mapping Initiatives, in partnership with Google Earth, documents and maps genocide and related crimes against humanity. I later realized that even when exhibited singly in museums, they still evoked their placement in the book -- like quotations from a sacred text they called up entire passages, themes, subtle connections to other photographs. Here started a journey into The Americans in an attempt to understand not just the photographs, but the book. It has been a journey among museum archives, borrowed books, and xerox machines. It has meant searching out other Frank fanatics, engaging in endless and at times pointless discussions and arguments, and planning forays into literature and foreign languages.

Thus far, 2009 has been the year of Paul Graham. The British-born photographer's study of American life, a shimmer of possibility, is on display at New York's Museum of Modern Art through May 18; he is on the shortlist for the £30,000 Deutsche Börse Prize; and a mid-career survey of his work, which opened in January at Folkwang Museum in Essen, Germany, and will travel to Hamburg and London. SteidlMACK has also released a new single-volume edition of shimmer (originally a 12-volume set), and another book, simply titled Paul Graham, to match the survey. Graham, who currently lives in New York, recently corresponded via email with PDN about the influence of American photography on his photographs, his creative process, and why the "documentary" label misses the mark in describing his work.

The Museum began acquiring photographs in 1852 and its collection is now is one of the largest and most important in the world. It holds over 500,000 images, by both classic and contemporary photographers, and illustrates a wide range of processes, techniques and subject matter. The Photography gallery focuses on the history of photography, with an annual display of around 40 outstanding photographs from the V&A's collection.

In 1994 The Metropolitan Museum of Art acquired the personal archive of the American photographer Walker Evans (1903-1975). The Walker Evans Archive contains the artist's life's work-forty thousand negatives and transparencies dating from the late 1920s to the early 1970s-as well as Evans's personal and professional correspondence, papers, diaries, family photo albums, and his collection of books, picture postcards, clippings, roadside signs, and works by other artists.
