If companies want to meet the needs of today’s workforce they ought to be offering them a new type of work experience and prioritising employee-interaction and flexitime working.

Many companies have buildings that are sleek, modern, architectural glass-steel-and-cement sculptures on the outside - and cubicle wastelands on the inside. These companies need to remember that most employees tend to work inside the building.

One way to activate the creativity of employees is to develop an environment where problem-solving is encouraged. I believe we are all inclined to innovate and problem-solve within our own space, so empowering employees to see the workplace as an extension of that space can give them the confidence they need to bring new ideas to the table.  Take the case of Arena—our organization exists because our founders Michael and Eric needed a better way to manage their product data—they had a problem, and they fixed it. I’m not saying everyone needs to be a company founder, but the desire to solve problems is what creates companies, and is what can lead to a more innovative workforce.

What kind of physical spaces provide the best environments for innovation to flourish? We asked three creative companies to share their workplace innovation secrets and descibe what makes them so perfectly suited to fostering creativity.

adobe, a company that has had unmatched influence in the design world, with the integrative and collaborative repertoire of programs that make much of our contemporary design possible, wanted a new building that would reflect and extend the company's innovative and creative character. as far as linking interior spaces with artistic quality, the campus is virtually unmatched. world-renowned street artist el mac and tattoo artist mike giant were commissioned to create large colorful murals that cover entire walls. open connected spaces create a sense of community amongst the workers, promoting collaboration throughout the light-filled structure. pockets of vibrant seating areas contain couches and chairs to join fellow employees in conversation or to simply relax.
