2007 Digital Future Report Source: Center for the Digital Future, Annenberg School, University of Southern California The Center for the Digital Future at the USC Annenberg School is pleased to present the results of the sixth year of our project, "Surveying the Digital Future." The six years of longitudinal research comprise an absolutely unique data base that completely captures broadband at home, the wireless Internet, on-line media, user-generated content and, now, social networking.

While interesting, I think this can be deleted as it doesn't focus on the feasibility of an all-digital library.

This finding and others were based on a survey of 45 research libraries in countries around the world, including the United States, Canada, Australia, Germany, and Japan."

This article points the way to a study for review: Ithaka's 2006 Studies of Key Stakeholders in the Digital Transformation in Higher Education, but the link doesn't work.

This is the initial data from a Deep Log Analysis study currently underway in the UK. The study analyzes the clicking behavior of ebook users, and then places that data into context: do people go to the brick-and-mortar library, or stay home? How long do they spend reading the books or articles? This report captures the results of 20,000 e-book users in the UK between January and May, 2008.

Springer eBook Collection claims to be "The World's most comprehensive online scientific book collection." There are some contact names on this website that we may want to include as interviewees in our study.

This article is a status report of the usage of eBooks on college campuses. Here is a quote in the article, "John Barnes of Cengage (formerly Gale) told the Charleston audience that, while his company still sells more print than electronic reference, users prefer electronic. He believes libraries should "move faster away from print reference" to meet user needs and increase usage. He cited a study done by Wright State University's Sue Polanka that found much greater use of an electronic collection than a print one, even though the electronic collection was only a fraction of the size of the print one. Further, the cost per use for the electronic collection was less than one-fifth of the cost per use of the print collection." We may want to find that Wright State University study. From the above quote, it seems to point to the feasibility of an all-digital library.

This article describes exactly how to measure a sample size for any given library. However, it involves a lot of hands on counting which may not be feasible for our study.

Predictions that etextbooks on the way--studies of student uses of e-textbooks

This author proposes and innovative method of pricing e-textbooks so that the publisher still maintains an adequate revenue stream and the individual cost per student is far lower than purchasing a printed textbook.

This article discusses how digitized text should be coded to enable easier searching and retrieval.

This book, available through ALA, appears to offer a philosophical discussion of the values of librarianship. It's neat that it is available for preview through Google books, but I don't think it is very relevant to our study.

This article mostly covers the process of mass digitization. One of the recommendations at the end of the article states, " A "digital lending right" should be created to provide universal access to all out-of-print works, through collaboration between national governments and creative communities. This would remove a barrier to the mass democratization of information access and make a contribution to the survival of some threatened languages."

This can be deleted. It discusses how publications in future libraries will be linked via hyperlinks, allowing for more in-depth scholarly research and collaborative research.
