The concept of this lesson is to choose a historical person, topic, or event and fit the historical information into a Christmas, Chanukah, or Kwanzaa song. The directions are very clear and easy to follow. Some examples of "carols" written for this assignment are provided so your students can get a good idea of how to approach the project. Consider a group sing-along when all the assignments are turned in.
"On July 20, 1969, the human race accomplished its single greatest technological achievement of all time when a human first set foot on another celestial body."
"
As colorful as the rainbow and as sparkling as fine leaded crystal, gemstones have captured the imaginations and desires of men and perhaps especially, women, for ages. The pursuit of gems have become the subject of legends, fairy tales, epics, and major motion pictures ("Romancing the Stone", for one). Today, more fine gemstone specimens are available to the average person than at any time in history. "
"Galaxy Zoo: Hubble uses gorgeous imagery of hundreds of thousands of galaxies drawn from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope archive. To understand how these galaxies, and our own, formed we need your help to classify them according to their shapes - a task at which your brain is better than even the most advanced computer. If you're quick, you may even be the first person in history to see each of the galaxies you're asked to classify.
More than 250,000 people have taken part in Galaxy Zoo so far, producing a wealth of valuable data and sending telescopes on Earth and in space chasing after their discoveries. The images used in Galaxy Zoo: Hubble are more detailed and beautiful than ever, and will allow us to look deeper into the Universe than ever before. To begin exploring, click the 'How To Take Part' link above, or read The Story So Far to find out what Galaxy Zoo has achieved to date."
