    a wonderful blog post by Jim McGee, April 1, 2002, on the importance of keeping a knowledge-log--k-log--for being able to retrace one's steps when the final conclusion/work product falls short and one has to start over and for engaging with others about how the thought line developed. Justifies paper printouts and variously named file versions to show stages of idea exploration and development. Our electronic work flow replaces how we used to work with handwritten drafts with all the erasures and column notes, then send them to a graphics person for placing into a graphics format, then circulating for reaction from involved stakeholders, some of them junior staff, then incorporating feedback, final edits, and voila! a product for the client.

    New report about adult literacy in technology rich environments. Majority (greater than 60%) of those with low numeracy, reading, and problem solving capabilities are high school graduates. Hispanic and black Americans have the lowest skill levels. 2/3 of low literacy adults are employed, but 40% have earnings in the bottom 1/5 of wage spectrum. Talks about solutions - most are collective actions across a wide spectrum of public and private organizations. "...the first and overarching strategy of this national call to action is for stakeholders to act collectively to raise awareness that transforming learning opportunities for youth and adults is a means of reaching shared goals.

  • “Blue Sky Meetings.” In an article posted earlier this week on Trade Show News Network, Rachel Wimberly gives an inside look at the National Retail Federation’s annual “Blue Sky Meetings.” More than 20 staff members and stakeholders get together—usually nine months out from the annual show—to discuss how to solve the challenges they have related to the tradeshow and how to make it a more personal experience for attendees. According to Susan Newman, NRF’s vice president of conferences, several ideas generated in the meeting have been implemented at shows. One example is its Fast Tracks keynotes, which are a spinoff of TED Talks and feature up-and-coming retail companies doing things differently.
