Some inspirational ideas on design thinking from IDEO.

I like his ideas, they are indeed inspirational and realizable. And the OpenIdeo Platform (Global community to solve big challenges for social good - http://www.openideo.com/ ) is very promising.

1. The purpose of this paper is to share reflections of the three authors on the process of instructional design and implementation of blended learning for teachers' professional development (PD) in rural western Kenya. 2. There are for different reserach questions but one of them is caught my attention as we have the same problem in our country I think; How appropriate is blended learning for teachers in a rural setting? 3. The design-based research methodology in the study comprised a number of research methods. The methods included ethnographic observations, qualitative interviews, narratives and documentation of design artifacts

Based on Reeves' design-based research model, this study did the research following 6 stages. In stage 1, a needs analysis was conducted with K-12 teachers in four 2-hour workshops in which teachers created WebQuests. Researchers came up with some design principles. In the second stage, based on needs analysis and literature review, a prototype Electronic Performance Support System (EPSS) was developed. In the following phase, the prototype EPSS was tested and evaluated as well as continuing needs analysis and refining design principles. In stage 4, the web-based EPSS prototype was developed through expert evaluation and some modifications were made. Stage 5 was characterized with continuous evaluation and testing with the practitioners in a similar workshop. Like in the first stage, data was collected through interviews, questionnaires, filed notes etc. Deriving from the findings gathered in stage 5, the design principles were developed and refined. As seen in the example, practitioners were involved in the process, both qualitative and quantitative data collection tools were utilized and EPSS was jointly developed by continuous evaluation and testing. I think the example is quite good to understand DBR.

The reserach focuses on the relationship between individual needs(with disability) and product functions. To fill the gap and develop physical concepts, it presents some product designs. The research builds on general functions based on product design methods, formal human activity classification and ICF(It provides a systematic organizing scheme and coding rules for human functional ability and limitation) and data mining.Then they explore the applicability of a data mining technique, specifically association rule mining, as embodied in the Apriori algorithm to create knowledge in the form of quantitatively characterized heuristics for universal design.

Dr. Susan McKenney discusses the balancing act that design-based researchers have as they take on multiple roles as researchers, designers, and practitioners. She also discusses the collaborative environment created by conducting research with multiple people on the research team.

*What is Design-based Research (DBR)? *How does DBR differ from other approaches? *How did DBR get started? *What are the benefits of DBR? *What are some critical perspective?

Especially I recommend the part in which differences between DBR and laboratory experimental research, design, action research, and formative evaluation are told. DBR research is told to be different from laboratory experiments in that research takes place in which there are lots interactions and dependent variables. In laboratory research however, dependent variables are set and other variables are hold constant. However, when they are not hold constant, they may effect the dependent variable. DBR differs from action research in that research is started with researchers whereas in action research, teachers start the work. In addition, in formative evaluation and action research, there is no theory refinement like in DBR.

He is criticizing the current schooling system and suggesting a learning environment which is already testing by him under "Hole in the wall" project. Let's check his design... Doodle3D Transform is a new 3D app that you can transfom your 2D drawings easily into 3D designs. Beside drawing by hand, you can also scan your photos or upload existing ones. After completing designs, you can send to 3D printer and have it. This project attract much attention at Kickstarter and they collected enough fund. This application can not be a sort of augmented reality one, I don't know but I want to share. I think, it is very usable and helpful for especially kindergarten students. Besides, while STEM is gaining many attention at the education society; this app can also be usable at other level with developing some extensions. Creativity is very important for all students at education and it is very appropriate for that mission. Using pen at our mobile education is still can be spectacular sometimes and I cannot imagine what will possibly happen if developers of that application succeed.

I want that! Where we can buy it?:)) Especially for kids it is really helpfull and enjoyable to realize which they draw something. It is like dreams come to the reality:)

This is an event organized by Learning by Design in Massachusetts, AK-12 architecture and design education program. The event is called Kids Build and the students are expected to build the whole city from ground to up. They engage family members and kids together to have them understand the importance of design. It is all realistic because they have to get building permit, get inspected, in short all the processes to build a structure. They are provided with materials and they are urged to get ideas from each other. You should see this video! :)

Purdue Polytechnic involves the Renaissance Academy Students to build a remote-controlled helicopter. Great example of learning by design :)

I've watched the video twice and in the end I've felt some concerns about the results of the studies. In the "how people learn" part, researchers were testing the storage and connection system of the brain through some high-tech tools. However, does neuropsychology provide enough evidence on the functioning of the brains? Can we generalize the results to all people from all cultures? I am not the one who is against neuropsychology, but for me one discipline may not give an appropriate answer to such a deep question. My second concern is about the integration of computer programs into the curriculum as a major learning tool. We see a program where "Betty" is speaking and giving feedback on the video. The program seems user friendly, but what about the negative aspects and limitations of the integration of technology into learning? Ok, I agree that we have to adapt to the rapid technological changes in the society. However, is technology the key to all learning processes? Plus, the program is designed on the mapping of the concepts. Does concept mapping make a curriculum compelling all the time? I am not sure about all characteristics of the program, but if it hasn't been designed in a challenging style and if all students come up with the same products, then how will they develop their knowledge and reasoning abilities? I couldn't find an answer to that. As for the part "effective teaching", I am in the same opinion with the researchers that there should be a connection between the real world and the subject taught. Moreover, I think the integration of the disciplines is difficult but a very good way of giving meaning to life. Besides, in the video we see teachers as a guide, as a facilitator and there is no doubt that providing individual support to the students helps students feel more involved.

Firstly, even if it is designed by utilizing modern technology and different understanding, which makes it a more developed and complicated one, the program used in the video reminded me the teaching machines of old times. It gives the priority to the cognitive aspect of learning. This seems to be a one-dimensional approach which underestimates the social aspect of learning. I think the value of classroom interaction for effective learning cannot be replaced by any kind of computer programs. Research on brain is really important and it provides very useful insights for learning and instructional activities. However, it should be supported by the findings of research by social psychologists as well. The very same individual may perform at varying levels when he is taught with the same methods in different environments. I personally experienced many times that even the absence of one individual in my classes affected the teaching an learning processes in a negative or positive way depending upon the classroom dinamics.

Art is like a filter in our brain to mean the world we are in. By visiting art museums, watching more movies and put more emphasize on literature, i believe that we really can 'Design the world' with respect to critical thinking skills and social tolerance:)

The author here suggests an alternate view and underlines that less structure will bring a lot more learning. The applicability and the feasibility of the design thinking is being questioned.

As a candidate curriculumist, I really like the video how can design a design based learning curriculum. Last seven or six minutes gives a specific example.

"If a decision were to be made by the minister of education or the government to move in a new direction, then the orientations, the value system and the commitment of design-based researchers would be a natural way because it is an engineering field approach applied in education,"

Hocam, it would be nice to build a DBR team, we desperately need such an innovation in our field. Maybe, there can be DBR schools where researchers can work with voluntary teachers. If some incentives are provided for the teachers by MONE, they will work eagerly in the projects. Just an example: nowadays, lots of English teachers are doing really good Comenius projects and the motive behind their hard work is going abroad:)

Grant Wiggins explains what it is understanding by design. He clearly explains the goal of design saying "The goal is not to make students do what the teacher taught but to see what they can do when the teacher is gone".
