Nuts and Bolts: How to Evaluate e-Learning by Jane Bozarth : Learning Solutions Magazine - 3 views

  • The linearity and causality implied within the taxonomy (for instance, the assumption that passing a test at Level 2 will result in improved job performance at Level 3) masks the reality of transferring training into measurable results. Many factors enable — or hinder — the transfer of training to on-the-job behavior change, including support from supervisors, rewards for improved performance, culture of the work unit, issues with procedures and paperwork, and political concerns
  • Robert Brinkerhoff takes a systems view of evaluation of training, believing it should focus on sustained performance rather than attempting to isolate the training effort:
  • learn best from the outliers

  • The method asks evaluators to: Identify individuals or teams that have been most successful in using some new capability or method provided through the training; Document the nature of the success; and Compare to instances of nonsuccess.

Social Graph API - Google Code - 0 views

  •
With so many websites to join, users must decide where to invest significant time in adding their same connections over and over. For developers, this means it is difficult to build successful web applications that hinge upon a critical mass of users for content and interaction. With the Social Graph API, developers can now utilize public connections their users have already created in other web services. It makes information about public connections between people easily available and useful.

Ah… the semantic web. The saviour of the internet, and the evil empire enforcing its evil standardization upon my freedom. I've always been a little suspicious of this particular topic. Not that I'm opposed to any kind of stardardization, railroads and the lack of standardizations with bank cards at grocery stores come to mind (grrr…) But the semantic web and how data is 'linked' is pretty important to analytics. time to dive in.

Daily Kos: UPDATED: The HB Gary Email That Should Concern Us All - 0 views

  • According to an embedded MS Word document found in one of the HBGary emails, it involves creating an army of sockpuppets, with sophisticated "persona management" software that allows a small team of only a few people to appear to be many, while keeping the personas from accidentally cross-contaminating each other. Then, to top it off, the team can actually automate some functions so one persona can appear to be an entire Brooks Brothers riot online.
  • Using the assigned social media accounts we can automate the posting of content that is relevant to the persona.
  •  There are a variety of social media tricks we can use to add a level of realness to all fictitious personas
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • Really? I thought. How do we know if those are real people? Twitter has to be the easiest thing to fake and to automate with retweets and 180 characrer max sentences. To the extent that the propaganda technique known as "Bandwagon" is an effective form of persuasion, which it definitely is, the ability for a few people to infiltrate a blog or social media site and appear to be many people, all taking one position in a debate, all agreeing, for example, that so and so is not credible, or a crook, is an incredibly powerful weapon.
  • I believe there are many people though who will base their judgment on rumors and mob attacks. And for those people, a fake mob can be really effective.

Which brings us to the underlying point of the piece - we are all leaving digital trails behind us, as we make our way around our individual lives. These trails are largely considered individual - even ethereal - yet technology is making these trails more visible and more readable everyday.

Over the last year, I've produced five data-driven pieces for Wired UK. Four of them have been for the two-page infoporn spread that can be found in every issue. I've looked at the UK's National DNA Database, used mined Twitter data to find people's travel paths, and mapped traffic in some of the world's busiest sea ports.

Also, "liking" itself is a very limited way of expressing your thoughts on something. You might like pizza, but no anchovis. If you dislike a Pizza Anchovis, what does the system store? On the other hand, some interesting analogies and recommendations can be done with relatively simple like/dislike statements and multiple choice answers.\n\nHunch should incorporate serendipity.
