The machismo culture is not the only factor; tradegies within the country have pushed men to become violent as well. Nicaragua has faced many natural disasters, such as Hurricane Mitch in 1998, and the tensions from the disasters result in more violence. In this case, the violent behaviors can also be seen as a way for men to make sense out of the natural disasters that cause so much pain.
