Guatemala has been struggling with a food shortage, which was declared "a state of calamity" on Tuesday. Thousands of families are extremely short of food due to the weather conditions. The government estimated about 400,000 families who are suffering, but hopefully with the 20 tons of nutritional cookies that the World Food Program distributes, the families will pull out of this calamity.

Here is a news video about new sex education books being distributed to schools in Mexico City. Students were glad to get the books that had real answers to their questions about sex and sexuality, as well as information about women's rights, domestic violence, and respect for different sexualities. Church groups and a parents association are strongly against the new book, and one member claimed that it "promotes death."

This year, Guatemala is facing an extreme food shortage. 25 children have already died from starvation, and millions of communities are at risk for malnutrition. The UN Food Program has distributed nutritional biscuits to the most affected areas. The food shortage was brought on my drought which led crops to failure. This adds to the extreme figures of malnutrition, which almost half of Guatemala's children suffer from.

This is an article from the NY Times that discusses the controversy surrounding the Supreme Court of Argentina's decision to decriminalize the private consumption of illicit drugs.

In August, the Supreme Court of Argentina decriminalized the private use of illicit drugs. Such inquiries as to whether to accept drug use, help those who are addicted, or maintain the prohibition have arisen internationally at an increased rate recently. The Argentine administration felt that the war on drugs has not succeeded as predicted and it should focus on "treatment (more than) punishment."

This is a very powerfull article because it talks about the connection that the gangs in Latin America has.Which means that the issue with gangs is not only an Amercian porblem.

This is a link to former Guatemalan president, Efrain Rios Montt Christian faith organization. He is an official minister of this California based Evangelical church. Montt is former dictator of Guatemala and regarded as one of the country's most brutal leaders, ever. Perhaps his faith shows his humane side or maybe the man is just ashamed of his past and covers it up by being active in the church he found.
