1 Week workshop: Easy Web 2.0 tools that you can use in your classroom - 5 views

  •
"Over the course of this event we will be looking at a small range of web based tools that will enable you to create motivating online language learning activities for your students. These can be used either in class or set as homework. You will have the chance to understand how these tools work, find out how to use them with students and be able to try your hand at creating and sharing activities with other teachers. By the end of the event you should have a small 'toolkit' of resources and ideas that will enable you to enhance your lessons though the effective and pedagogically sound use of technology."

12 Tips for training older teachers to use technology - Resources for English Language ... - 2 views

  •
There is an assumption that persists in the educational community that more mature teachers are much more difficult and reluctant to be trained on the effective use of educational technology. To some degree, I think this assumption has been built on by the digital native vs digital immigrant myth. But as someone who has trained teachers of all ages all over the world I would say that, from my own experience, this hasn't been the case.

provides immediate access to facts. It visualizes facts as well as relationships between facts. You can also collect, process and publish bits of information. Currently processes the English and German Wikipedia as well as MEDLINE/PubMed. Our approach is inspired by current research results from cognitive science, computational linguistics and neurobiology. We aim at radically improving the way users interact with knowledge and information online. Recent studies show that human thought processes have a strong visual component and that the brain can process images significantly faster than textual information. We are convinced that it is time for innovative, interactive, visual methods of working with and discovering facts and information instead of wading through ever longer lists of documents and search results.

Rise in Online Classes Flares Debate About Quality - NYTimes.com - 0 views

Being able to cut-and-paste a Wikipedia answer about Social Darwinism into an online activity for credit suggests to me the need for more inspired activities, rather than a different technology. There are ways to stimulate thinking, rather than copying, about Social Darwinism -- thinking that you couldn't fake, whether that student is thinking in a classroom or at home. Part of what I take from this article is that schools are using online for the wrong reasons and in the wrong way. This shouldn't be an indictment of the medium, but of the way in which it has been integrated into the K12 system.

Babel - Languages - 0 views

In the Bible, after the Great Flood that washed the whole of the Earth - a united group of people, speaking one language, came to the land of Shinar and created a massive tower to ensure that they won't be "scattered in the face of the Earth". However, God saw this and said, "They are one people and have one language, and nothing will be withholden from them which they purpose to do... Come, let us go down and confound their speech." Then, God scattered these people and confounded their speech - the tower was then called Babel (from the Hebrew word, "balal" meaning to jumble.)

  • There are certain perceived advantages – flexibility, price, personalized learning… but frankly most of the research will show that these are not nearly as important as we might feel.
  • Disadvantages in online language courses are relatively obvious, I think – lack of easy group practice, lack of eye contact, lack of many paralinguistic features which make the possibility of group gelling and real communicative practice much harder than they might be in a face-to-face context.
  • there are plenty of opportunities online for real, meaningful language practice – Second Life with its international communities of native speakers springs to mind here – and these may be much more real and useful than anything that may be achieved in an online classroom.
  • ...6 more annotations...
  • you cannot really learn a language online, but you can improve one.
  • many online courses will give you plenty of practice in the basic skills, few of them have the community side in place to successfully emulate the experience of learning with a group of like-minded people.
  • the social community should be the absolute centre of any school or course, and not something tacked on at the end.
  • People need to get together and talk to each other, to laugh and share and discuss – you simply don’t get this in an online tutorial with a teacher. So yes, by all means have good solid exercises, games and everything else – but don’t bother opening an online school, or engaging in distance language teaching unless you give people a chance to talk to each other.
  • I would be looking for a company that has been around for a while, long enough to prove that what it offers is good enough to survive. I would then be looking at if they are recognized by an institution for the work they do.
  • I’d ask to talk to a real human being at the other end of the phone who could answer my questions in the language of my choice, and I would find out about the organization – who they have working for them, who the writers are, who their big clients are. I’d have a sample class and a sample tutorial.

    * An example sentence-even if we've only found one sentence for a word, we'll show it to you. (And we'll show you where the sentence came from, too! * Related words: not just synonyms and antonyms, but words that are used in the same contexts. (For instance, cheeseburger, milkshake, and doughnut are not synonyms, but they show up in the same kinds of sentences.) * Images tagged by our friends at Flickr: want to know what a "pout" looks like? We'll show you. * Statistics: how rare is "tintinnabulation"? Well, we think you'll see it only about once a year. "Smile"? You might see that word Our goal is to show you as much information as possible many times, every day. * An audio pronunciation-and you can record your own! * Something YOU tell us! Use the "Contribute" links to tell us something-anything-about a word.

The International Phonetic Alphabet - limited free version - 1 views

  •
The following page provides a graphic interface for exploring the International Phonetic Alphabet. To use the resource simply click on any link to hear an illustrative example. For example, most rows in the Pulmonic chart (Manner of Articulation) have descriptive audio that explains each row completely. Other charts (Non-Pulmonic, Vowels etc.) have detailed audio descriptions available by clicking on the chart title. Within each chart, clicking on any IPA character will play an example of that sound. With consonants, you will hear the sound in exclusion followed by an intervocalic example. You will need a recent browser and QuickTime installed on your computer in order to use the page to the fullest. You will also need a UVic NetLinkID to access these copyrighted materials.

Script Converter - 2 views

  •
Script Converter is a Google Labs product that allows the user to read a web page in a script of their choice. For example if the user can understand spoken Tamil but cannot read the script, they will be able to view Tamil web pages in English (Roman) script. We do not translate any content - we transform the words on the page to its phonetic equivalent in the desired script. We also support the conversion from non-Unicode encodings to Unicode, so that users can view pages without installing the custom font otherwise needed. Users will still need Unicode fonts. To start browsing a website, type the url in the text area, choose your preferred script and press convert.\n Currently we support the following scripts.\n\n * Bengali\n * English\n * Gujarati\n * Devanagari (Hindi, Marathi, Nepali)\n * Kannada\n * Malayalam\n * Tamil\n * Telugu

A few years ago I was taking a tour of a dome shaped house, and the architect explained to me that domes are an optical illusion. Whenever someone enters a room, their eyes inadvertently glance up at the corners of the room to give them the contextual dimensions of the space they're in.
