Dead language is defined as a language neither used nor spoken as a native language or mother tongue. Essentially it means no one speaks the language anymore as a medium for day to day communication, some examples of which are Latin, ancient Greek and Sanskrit.

In the Bible, after the Great Flood that washed the whole of the Earth - a united group of people, speaking one language, came to the land of Shinar and created a massive tower to ensure that they won't be "scattered in the face of the Earth". However, God saw this and said, "They are one people and have one language, and nothing will be withholden from them which they purpose to do... Come, let us go down and confound their speech." Then, God scattered these people and confounded their speech - the tower was then called Babel (from the Hebrew word, "balal" meaning to jumble.)
