Nokia Cell Phones Has Something To Say - 0 views

  •
Very few inventions have revolutionized the workings of modern society such as the cell phone. Since the 1980s, when cell phones were large and cumbersome and were hardly considered more than a status symbol among the yuppie culture, cell phones have grown to be probably the single most ubiquitous personal electronic device on the planet. As of 2009, there are approximately 4.6 billion

Apple stabs Adobe in the back « Scobleizer - Tech geek blogger - 0 views

  •
On a week when Microsoft landed a big deal to put Silverlight on Nokia phones, Apple's CEO, Steve Jobs, tells Adobe that there won't be Flash on the iPhone. This is a real bummer for Adobe and many users and developers, because most of the world's casual games are written for Flash. Just go over to game site Kongregate. Or, look at the world's video like that on YouTube (or any other video site like the Qik one that I use on my cell phone). Almost all of it is done in Flash. Now developers at those sites will need to find some other method to get those games and videos onto the iPhone.

  • PocketCaster™ GPS application which took top honors in the competition and walked away with $50K in cash (and $10k for winning the Business Application category) +$100k in Navteq data licenses. The application is designed to take advantage of camera phones (video) with integrated GPS capabilities (like the new Nokia N95). Simply put, the app enables simple, one-button mobile web casting where the user can stream video live to a web server while the application also embeds data, time, and geopositioning information into the video stream. The user’s location can be tracked and viewed dynamically on a mashup (like a Google map) or with Navteq data while the video is streaming and the user location is continually updated. Comvue is the developer of the popular Comvue PocketCaster application, enabling users to stream live video to websites, blogs, or other web apps. See http://www.comvu.com/
  • Consumer usage of LBS-enabled apps is growing rapidly, with the most popular use being maps and directions, location search, nearby entertainment location, and perhaps the most highly anticipated segment (as seen and heard at the CTIA conference) LBS gaming. Driving the uptake of Location services are the growing number of GPS-enabled phones, with GSM devices like the Nokia N95 and 6610 “navigator” now penetrating the space (finally). The ever increasing important of local search (i.e. what’s near me) as well ass community and content sharing is also propelling the demand and usage of location in the mobile arena – think about it. Just imagine what you can do when your cell phone knows exactly where you are and then shares that location with applications and services!

mobiles, human rights, and anonymity - 0 views

  • So that got me wondering: is there a mobile equivalent of Tor? For those of you who aren't familiar with it, TOR is a software project that helps Internet users remain anonymous. Running the TOR software on your computer causes your online communications to bounce through a random series of relay servers around the world. That way, there's no easy way for authorities to track you or observe who's visiting banned websites. For example, let's say you're in Beijing and you publish a blog the authorities don't like. If you just used your PC as usual and logged into your publishing platform directly, they could follow your activities and track you down. With Tor, you hop-scotch around: your PC might connect to a server in Oslo, then Buenos Aires, then Miami, then Tokyo, then Greece before it finally connects to your blogging platform. Each time you did this, it would be a different series of servers. That way, it's really difficult for authorities to trace your steps.

Mobile Phones, Human Rights and Anonymity I've been playing around with my new Nokia N95 for the last couple of weeks and quite amazed with its ability to stream live video from the phone to the Internet. Like last weekend when I streamed from the Smithsonian Kite Festival; for around 30 minutes I gave a tour of the festivities and took questions from users as they watched the stream over the Internet. I've also spent some time talking it up with colleagues at NPR, brainstorming the possibilities of what would happen if reporters used these phones - or if their sources did. The example that keeps coming to mind regarding the latter scenario is the rioting in Tibet. While some video has leaked out, it's been limited and often delayed. Imagine if the protestors were able to webcast their protests - and the ensuing crackdowns - live over their phones using China's GSM network? The video would stream live and get crossposted via tools like YouTube, Seesmic and Twitter, spreading the content around so it can't be snuffed. But that raises an obvious question - how long could protestors or dissidents get away with such activities before getting caught? If you were running software on your phone to send live video over a 3G network, like I've been doing on my N95, you'd think it wouldn't take too much effort on the part of the mobile provider and/or government to figure out which phone was sending the signal and its precise location. So that got me wondering: is there a mobile equivalent of Tor? For those of you who aren't familiar with it, TOR is a software project that helps Internet users remain anonymous. Running the TOR software on your computer causes your online communications to bounce through a random series of relay servers around the world.
