Google is implementing voice activated natural language processing technology - already available across Google products like Android and Search - to all Google Analytics users over the next few weeks.

On Tuesday, Google is expected to finally unveil its answer to the Echo, alongside new smartphones and tablets. The Google Home device, which looks a little like an air freshener, is expected to go on sale later this month.

Google believes that artificial intelligence (A.I.) virtual assistants (VA) and the conversational user interface (CUI) will largely supplant search engines and mobile apps for many users. We're moving into an "A.I.-first world," according to Google CEO Sundar Pichai.

Google Search itself provides one of the most familiar examples of predictive intelligence. When you enter keywords in the search box, Google predicts what you are interested in and then presents you with results that match that intent. Since it released the first version of its Prediction API in 2010, Google has made some of these methods available to developers. Adoption among developers has not been high because machine learning requires a lot of infrastructure and validation to produce accurate results. Developers have also reported discomfort with basing products on black box APIs.

Google doesn't rely on any one strategy, but deploys a number of them to create an intricate-but powerful-innovation ecosystem that seems to roll out innovations by the dozens.

How do we learn the meaning of text from data? In other words, how can a machine truly understand the phrases that human beings blab into its search fields and microphone? The researchers at Google and elsewhere have settled on an answer to that question: machine learning; specifically, a form of artificial intelligence called neural networks-self-organising systems modelled on the way the brain works.

The world's biggest artificial intelligence companies, including Facebook and Google, have joined forces to mould the ethical rules that will govern how robots and computer programs behave in the future.

About time and welcome. I hope that those with experience of medical ethics are also involved. For two reasons; medicine is likely to be a major player and beneficiary of AI (eg personalised drugs) and medical ethics is a mature field that is used to responding to rapid innovation.

Teaching computers to understand casual, contextual conversation in every language and accent is key to this quest to normalise our interactions with computers and to place Google even more squarely at the centre of our lives.

Prediction Markets Google Group. The Group comes compleat with some very opinionated characters. Can be useful to watch the ambient flow from a distance for nuggets like the Economist article. Suggest people subscribe with a non-work id that they can check at their leisure so any posts don't clutter work email on handhelds.

Social search - is Google missing a trick?

Steve, have you tried Greplin and if so what's your experience? Does it negate the need for other search tools (I don't want a proliferation of search tools)? Does the indexing slow up your machine?

Gary, it does a better search of your social networks than Google, probably because you're giving it permission to index them. You still need a general search engine (such as Google) for the broader internet content. Indexing has no impact on your machine. I haven't used it long enough to determine whether or not it's features are useful enough to make it my first choice search engine for social media/social network content.

Our local hospital is part of the Royal Free Trust (the body that gave Deepmind MY data). The trust has never consulted me on this. I don't care whether it has a legal duty to do so or not, I believe it has a moral obligation to tell me what it is doing and why. Deepmind may have altruistic public health motives (hmmm), but this silence is destroying trust (pardon the pun). It's about time the data Ombudsmen did their job.
