Welcome to Math Matters, where we employ 21st century learning tools and methodologies to help make math relevant and fun again for both you and your students. This 30-segment video resource focuses on ninth grade Pre-Algebra and Algebra. What makes this unit different from most? It revolves around the world of off-road motorcycle racing. Team HotChalk worked with a group of young HotChalk-sponsored cyclists, videotaping them jumping off ramps along dirt bike tracks and racing up the golden summer hills of a ranch overlooking the ocean in Central California. Courtesy of math teachers Jason Dyer (Pueblo High School, Tuscon, AZ), who scripted out the 'real world' algebra problems, and John Villavicencio (Berkeley High School, Berkeley, CA), who explains the step-by-step solutions in each segment, we are bringing you our first homemade model of YouTube-style learning, "Off-Road Algebra." Computer program helps students with music, literacy skills Students at a Florida middle school are enhancing their musical literacy through SmartMusic, a software program that scores students' attempts to play along with sheet music on a computer screen. Teachers can review the students' work and type in feedback and grades. The program does more than just improve musical knowledge, the school's band director said. "I have seen the results of their growth academically alongside what they are doing musically," he said. The Tampa Tribune (Fla.)

"Student blogging is not a project, but a process. We are continuously striving to refine, improve and re-evaluate. As I am meeting with teachers individually, I can't stress enough the importance of READING other blogs (professional, student, blogs about your hobby, blogs about other interests you have etc.). I am trying to filter and funnel quality blogs in education, their grade level and areas of interest to them as I come across them, so they can build a quality RSS Reader. BUT.. we need their help in having a basic understanding of blogs, its pedagogical uses, as a platform of a new writing genre (digital writing) and how our blogfolios fit into your curriculum and the BIG PICTURE of LEARNING. The blogfolios are not a platform to use only for a particular subject, but should give evidence of learning for each student. "

You could even use this app as a "Notes" application, with the only difference being that instead of having to write everything down, you can just film it! As a plus, you can record your voice with a microphone and email the video for viewing on a computer!
