The previous sections have extensively used the CND notation to illustrate the examples. Now that the most important concepts have been demonstrated, this section will give an in-depth overview of the CND. JSR 283 further defines an XML-based format for defining node type definitions, however, it has not been finalized yet at the time of writing. A CND file contains a series of namespace declarations, node type definitions, as well as comments which are denoted with a double slash (//).

"Business Process Management functionality has been added to SwitchYard via the BPM Component work done in SWITCHYARD-174. The BPM Component leverages jBPM 5 (currently version 5.1.0.Final) under the hood to accomplish this. To illustrate this new functionality, a new Quickstart Demo has been created. The business process is a "Help Desk" workflow, and is available in the quickstarts git repository under demos/helpdesk/. Let's start by looking at a graphical representation of the process:"

Apache ServiceMix is an open source ESB (Enterprise Service Bus) that combines the functionality of a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and an Event Driven Architecture (EDA)  to create an agile, enterprise ESB. Apache ServiceMix is an open source distributed ESB built from the ground up on the  Java Business Integration (JBI) specification JSR 208 and released under the Apache license. The goal of JBI is to allow components and services to be integrated in a vendor independent way, allowing users and vendors to plug and play.

Last week I decided to challenge Scala's downscalability by trying to replace a Groovy script with a Scala pendant. In this article you will read about this little experiment and a comparision of the Scala result with the Groovy predecessor. But first some background about the script: Some time ago my company introduced a new spam notification system.  When it thinks that a mail contains spam, it keeps it in quarantine and once or twice a day sends an email to the recipient (me) reporting all the kept mails, together with an intranet web link for each  to release it. The goal is to provide a one-click application based on a given EMF model. Besides the EMF model no additional components have to be developed or generated. Therefore ECP provides a standard solution including the most common features needed for EMF-based client applications. This application can then be customized step by step. This can be done by extending ECP or replacing single components completly.

The Whole Platform is an open source technology for engineering the production of software. Based on the idea that programming is an activity concerning the development of domain languages, the Whole Platform provides an Eclipse-based Language Workbench

"The Community Dashboard Editor (CDE) is the outcome of real-world needs: It was born to greatly simplify the creation, edition and rendering of dashboards. CDE and the technology underneath (CDF, CDA and CCC) allows to develop and deploy dashboards in the Pentaho platform in a fast and effective way."

Besides being able to query and manipulate the underlying data management system with Blueprints, a GraphML reader and writer package is provided with Blueprints for streaming XML graph representations into and out of the underlying graph framework. The GraphML package uses StAX to process a GraphML graph. This section discusses the use of the GraphML library for reading and writing XML-encoded graphs.

DdlUtils is a small, easy-to-use component for working with Database Definition (DDL) files. These are XML files that contain the definition of a database schema, e.g. tables and columns. These files can be fed into DdlUtils via its Ant task or programmatically in order to create the corresponding database or alter it so that it corresponds to the DDL. Likewise, DdlUtils can generate a DDL file for an existing database. DdlUtils uses the Turbine XML format, which is shared by Torque and OJB. This format expresses the database schema in a database-independent way by using JDBC datatypes instead of raw SQL datatypes which are inherently database specific. An example of such a file is:

"A lot of people have asked me to document the reasons I want to migrate Hibernate from Maven to Gradle as its build tool so I enumerate those reasons here. If you are completely new to Gradle, I suggest having a look at their overview page. Up front I want to point out that this is not intended as a "Maven bash session" nor as a means to directly compare Maven and Gradle. It is just a means to describe the issues and frustrations I have seen in my 2.5+ years of using Maven for Hibernate builds; in many cases the cause is simply an assumption or concept in Maven itself which did not line up cleanly with how I wanted to do build stuff in Hibernate. Some of the list aggregated by Paul comes directly from Hibernate use-cases; I'd suggest reading through those as well. It is also a means to describe why I decided on Gradle as opposed to other related build tools out there now (Buildr, SBT, etc). The default EMF UML2 repository implementation was changed from UML2 1.x to UML2 2.x, in order to support the most current versions of the MagicDraw and Rational tools. Due to conflicting dependencies in the uml libraries, both implementations could not be supported at the same time.

The release 3.0 of Spring Framework added the Spring Module OXM which supports the marshalling and unmarshalling of Java objects and XML documents.In this post, we will be using Spring OXM to take a Java object, convert it to a XML-format and save it in the hard-disk as an XML file containing information of that Java object. We will also cover how to retrieve back the serialized state of that XML file and reconstruct it back to it's original state as a Java object.

Emfatic is a text editor supporting navigation, editing, and conversion of Ecore models, using a compact and human-readable syntax similar to Java. The EPLed Emfatic now hosted at EMFT extends the Feb 2005 alphaworks release with support for EMF Generics, folding, "red squigglies", an EMF Type Hierarchy, hyperlinks, AutoEdits, and the possibility to define templates to speed up document creation, among other usability features. The best way to gain hands-on experience with Emfatic is to right-click on any .ecore file and choose Generate Emfatic source, a similar converter works in the opposite direction. Online help is also available. Emfatic itself builds upon Gymnast, a framework for jumpstarting text editors for custom Domain Specific Languages. Documentation on how to extend Emfatic, as well as on using Gymnast, can be found in this technical report.

"Joda-Time provides a quality replacement for the Java date and time classes. The design allows for multiple calendar systems, while still providing a simple API. The 'default' calendar is the ISO8601 standard which is used by XML. The Gregorian, Julian, Buddhist, Coptic, Ethiopic and Islamic systems are also included, and we welcome further additions. Supporting classes include time zone, duration, format and parsing. "

Apache XML-RPC is a Java implementation of XML-RPC, a popular protocol that uses XML over HTTP to implement remote procedure calls. Version 3 of Apache XML-RPC is still compliant to the XML-RPC specification. However, the user may enable several vendor extensions are available, that greatly extend the power of XML-RPC: All primitive Java types are supported, including long, byte, short, and double. Calendar objects are supported. In particular, timezone settings, and milliseconds may be sent. DOM nodes, or JAXB objects, can be transmitted. So are objects implementing the java.io.Serializable interface. Both server and client can operate in a streaming mode, which preserves resources much better than the default mode, which is based on large internal byte arrays.

SymmetricDS is web-enabled, database independent, data synchronization/replication software. It uses web and database technologies to replicate tables between relational databases in near real time. The software was designed to scale for a large number of databases, work across low-bandwidth connections, and withstand periods of network outage. By using database triggers, SymmetricDS guarantees that data changes are captured and atomicity is preserved. Support for database vendors is provided through a Database Dialect layer, with implementations for MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, DB2, Firebird, HSQLDB, H2, and Apache Derby included. Synchronization can be configured to push data (trickle-back) or pull data (trickle-poll) at an interval. SymmetricDS allows for synchronization between two or more tiers of nodes, such as the following: A farm of web server nodes fronting an enterprise-class general office database A handful of regional servers for synchronizing from the general office to remote geographical areas 1000(s) of store server nodes using a departmental class database to sync with a regional node 10(s) of Point of Sale (POS) register nodes using an embedded database to sync with a store server Deployment options include the following: Web application archive (WAR) deployed to an application server such as Tomcat, Jetty, or JBoss Standalone service Embedded in an application SymmetricDS is written in Java and licensed as open source software under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL).
