New simulation could shed light on dark energy and expansion of the universe - 0 views

  •
Scientists have created the most accurate way yet of simulating the way the universe expands. Dubbed "gevolution", the tool will for the first time allow researchers to take into account the effect of ripples in spacetime - known as gravitational waves - and could help shed light on dark energy, the mysterious force driving the universe's accelerated expansion.
  •
The article is about how with the discovery of gravitational waves, they are creating a model that will now have the element of gravity/ 'the effect of ripples in space-time'. This will allow researches to now explore dark energy and if it exists. Here the Stakeholders are scientists and programmers making the model and simulation. The scientist, as they will be using the simulation and the programmer as they'll create the programs for it to run on. Mathematicians too will be involved, as they will have to take what is research and transform in into equations. The main social ethical significance will be that science advancing forwards with a new understanding of the universe we live. This will allow us to come up with new models for everyday life as well as optimization of existing models. However some people see this idea as a waste of time as the newton's model work well already at simulating the universe. The new model however will cost a lot and time to program the software involved, but will allow for a greater degree of detail and accuracy to models of the universe. The main IT systems involved are super computers that have to compute the models of the universe inside them. These will have to compute complicated equation together to then develop a simulation that can be further observed by researches. Software will be a major aspects as it will have to be programed to use new equation along side exist equations to generate a new model.

teleworking - 0 views

  •
Telecommuting is a practice in which an employee works at a location-usually, but not always, one's home-that is remote from the actual business facility at which he/she is employed. Under this arrangement, the employee maintains close contact with coworkers and supervisors via various forms of computer, Internet, and communication technology (i.e, electronic mail, telephone, computer disks, etc.)

This might be the most stylish smart home hub yet - 1 views

  •
Most smart home hubs are ugly. In fact, most products with the word "hub" in their name are probably ugly. Even the word "hub" sounds pretty ugly. So it's a really nice change of pace to see what the team behind a new startup called Silk Labs has created: an extremely stylish smart home hub that doesn't look like any other tech product out there.
  •
This article goes into a new system developed to allow a more stylish user interface. However, the article does have some bias I believe, as seen in the first paragraph, so be wary.

ITGS Shopper cheated by supermarket scanners
  • "I think it should be of real concern to consumers. If you translate it into monetary terms, it has to be in the millions of dollars. "The implications from a study like this are massive. Consumers in New Zealand are not making enough noise about it yet," he said. In one case, a supermarket offered bottles of coke for 99c, but displayed the wrong size bottles under the sign, and charged the shopper $3.

These paragraphs talk about the implications that the technology error caused in the society.
  • In another, a cooked chicken was advertised on sale for $6.99, but the original price of $11.99 was charged at the checkout. In this case, Pickering said, the mistake was spotted and the customer was given the chicken for free. But more often, retailers respond badly when errors are pointed out. Shoppers who took part in the study reported sales people "rolling their eyes" when asked for a refund, having to fill out forms to get a $2 overcharge returned, and being offered cash refunds only when the original purchase was by credit card. "The errors are happening right across the retail area, particularly large-scale stores," Pickering said. "When you're pumping 100 items through a till, it's much easier to make a mistake and much more difficult for the customer to keep up with the things flying through the scanner."

This part of the article discusses the social impact on the society as a result of the development in a technological problem. It talks about the economic importance of this because a lot of consumers are losing money which transfers to millions of dollars in total.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • Pickering said he'd like to see companies here make efforts to solve the problem. "There's an opportunity for these big businesses to say, 'The problem exists, we haven't been able to sort it out completely, but we going to do something about it'."

What feasible solutions can be applied to overcome problems? This paragraph talks about the fact that the supermarkets don't knowthe solution but are trying to work it out.

BBC News - The future is fidgetal - 2 views

  • Technology, and the hype that surrounds it, is changing the way we speak. But we don't have to turn into drones, all spouting the latest i-word. Chris Bowlby says it's time for the techno-bullied to fight back with their own subversive speak.
    • danielabimibola

First of all, using technology does not make one a drone and secondly adding words to a language does not make that language any less as useful but instead makes it more diverse.

Why e-voting is not a good thing - 0 views

  •
Scenario: the shortest most accurate scenario is that voting machines are terrible choice as they are now. The longer version is that the old rules for security will either have to change or there will be major security issues such as vote auditing will have to be done with software which has to be checked and the software checking that has to be checked. or if votes are kept anonymous there is no way of knowing if 30% of votes were deleted then filled with fake ones. Social ethical issues: If the technology is compromised then it allows the peoples opinion to be hidden by stronger powers. This can lead to dictatorships or buying victories instead of winning them. It systems: the ease of computers also allows for ease of changing things. This means that there is no way (yet) to separate the pros from the cons . Stakeholders: Political parties, business, hackers, countries
