Open source vs commercial - 0 views

  •
Both models each serve the specific needs and circumstances of the environment where the software is to be deployed. And such needs and circumstances ultimately determine what factors are relevant and applicable, and whether certain advantages and disadvantages of the open source or commercial software model should be given more weight and consideration in determining the approach for that implementation and deployment.

Hacking fears jeopardise e-voting rollout - SWI swissinfo.ch - 1 views

  •
Voting electronically is only possible in four of the 26 cantons in the next election: Geneva, Basel City, Lucerne and Neuchâtel In a press release last month, the government said an audit of the electronic voting system developed by American company Unisys revealed major security flaws in the protection of voting secrecy.
  •
The article is about how e-voting Switzerland, and how the government there is not allowing the entire country to use American companies e-voting, as they believe they can be hacked into. The main issues that come from it is reliability of these machines and if you can trust the Companies that own them. With these machines (e-voting) they have the problem of being hacked, which instead of causing problems for a small percentage of votes, can cause a major problem for the entire thing. There is also the problem of the people who own the company, and the reliability with them. They have control of the machines and in doing so, have control of the votes within them. This means they can alter votes in favor of the one side that benefits them more, or can sell this ability to the highest bidder. One way to solve this problem is that you develop local open software. In conjunction with this openness of this software, you hold mini rewards for people who can break/hack the system and then explain how they did it. The primary stakeholders are the citizens as their choices/votes are the main target here. The government as trying to get the most accurate feeling of what the people want. The It systems the article describes are those of; e-voting machines as well as mentioning web-based voting.

Why e-voting is not a good thing - 0 views

  •
Scenario: the shortest most accurate scenario is that voting machines are terrible choice as they are now. The longer version is that the old rules for security will either have to change or there will be major security issues such as vote auditing will have to be done with software which has to be checked and the software checking that has to be checked. or if votes are kept anonymous there is no way of knowing if 30% of votes were deleted then filled with fake ones. Social ethical issues: If the technology is compromised then it allows the peoples opinion to be hidden by stronger powers. This can lead to dictatorships or buying victories instead of winning them. It systems: the ease of computers also allows for ease of changing things. This means that there is no way (yet) to separate the pros from the cons . Stakeholders: Political parties, business, hackers, countries

How to Fix Our Broken Patent System (In regard to software) - 1 views

  •
senario: Big companies are patenting software either that they don't owen or is to broad this means that if any developer find//wants to make an actuall solution they either get sued or have to pay the companies money to use the patient. Social/ethical: THis means that fat cats make money while there is still no actual solotion to these problems. Stake Holder: developers and big buissniess

New simulation could shed light on dark energy and expansion of the universe - 0 views

  •
Scientists have created the most accurate way yet of simulating the way the universe expands. Dubbed "gevolution", the tool will for the first time allow researchers to take into account the effect of ripples in spacetime - known as gravitational waves - and could help shed light on dark energy, the mysterious force driving the universe's accelerated expansion.
  •
The article is about how with the discovery of gravitational waves, they are creating a model that will now have the element of gravity/ 'the effect of ripples in space-time'. This will allow researches to now explore dark energy and if it exists. Here the Stakeholders are scientists and programmers making the model and simulation. The scientist, as they will be using the simulation and the programmer as they'll create the programs for it to run on. Mathematicians too will be involved, as they will have to take what is research and transform in into equations. The main social ethical significance will be that science advancing forwards with a new understanding of the universe we live. This will allow us to come up with new models for everyday life as well as optimization of existing models. However some people see this idea as a waste of time as the newton's model work well already at simulating the universe. The new model however will cost a lot and time to program the software involved, but will allow for a greater degree of detail and accuracy to models of the universe. The main IT systems involved are super computers that have to compute the models of the universe inside them. These will have to compute complicated equation together to then develop a simulation that can be further observed by researches. Software will be a major aspects as it will have to be programed to use new equation along side exist equations to generate a new model.

Stephen Hawking: Humans evolve slowly, AI could stomp us out - 0 views

  •
We think of ourselves as evolved creatures. It's just that sometimes we forget how slow that evolution is. Along comes Stephen Hawking to remind us that artificial intelligence might just evolve a little quicker than we're prone to. The result could be the end of our evolution and, indeed, the end of us.
  •
Scenario: Human design a robot that is more intelligent than us. It realizes that it can evolve faster than us, and so no longer has any need for us, leading to the death of the human race. Social and ethical: The main point in this article is that we will develop our own ends. That we will develop a machine that will have the capability to perhaps kill us. Stake Holders: Steven Hawking is a stake holder in this article as he is the one who suggested that we should be thoughtful about our development of intelligent machines. Humanity: Robots could become more powerful than we could ever be really fast, and so end us. AI companies will have to worry about and have ways to prevent this. IT System: Currently we do not have the technology to enable this level of complexity in both Hardware and Software, however Moore's Law states that we are getting closer to this with every year.

Lots of issues here can you choose any?
  • more than 300,000 routers in homes and small businesses that have been taken over through loopholes in their core software.
  • These first victims had been in Eastern Europe, but now most of the machines were in Vietnam with the rest scattered around Europe as well as a couple of other countries, said Team Cymru.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • t's a definite evolution in technology - going after the internet gateway, not the end machine," Mr Santorelli told the BBC in an email. "We see these leaps in concepts every few years in cybercrime." Team Cymru had contacted law enforcement about the attack and informed ISPs with a lot of compromised customers, he said.
