#2 Karen M on 23 Nov 10The article that I read was about the Chinese government trying to control what is being posted on social networking sites in China. The government claimed that the woman was "disrupting social order" by retweeting a satricial message about Chinese protesters smashing the Japanese pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo. The woman who was responsible about retweeting the post was sentenced to a year in a labor camp. Twitter is the social network that is involved with this article. The issue here is control. The government is trying to control what their citizens say online, as well as what their citizens are able to see. From the Chinese government's perspective, controlling what is posted on social networks is beneficial for them because they are able to control how the citizens are thinking. For example, if citizens are not exposed to negative ideas about the government, they might not ever think of the government to have any flaws. From the perspective of the Chinese citizens, this has a negative effect on them because their freedom of speech is taken away by the government. They are not allowed to post their opinions on their social networks.
