Think outside of yourselves and look at the world. There is political and strife and conflict on every continent and there have been natural disasters in both hemispheres. In both scenarios, social networking has enabled people to take care of serious business. Consider issues with social networking that are relevant to the politics and government area of impact. The article that I read was about the Chinese government trying to control what is being posted on social networking sites in China. The government claimed that the woman was "disrupting social order" by retweeting a satricial message about Chinese protesters smashing the Japanese pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo. The woman who was responsible about retweeting the post was sentenced to a year in a labor camp. Twitter is the social network that is involved with this article. The issue here is control. The government is trying to control what their citizens say online, as well as what their citizens are able to see. From the Chinese government's perspective, controlling what is posted on social networks is beneficial for them because they are able to control how the citizens are thinking. For example, if citizens are not exposed to negative ideas about the government, they might not ever think of the government to have any flaws. From the perspective of the Chinese citizens, this has a negative effect on them because their freedom of speech is taken away by the government. They are not allowed to post their opinions on their social networks.
The article I read was about the United States government using social networking sites like Facebook and Myspace to do investigation on people and catch criminals. Though it may be helpful for the government it brings up privacy issues since the government is in fact surveiling the U.S. population. There was a lawsuit against the government was in fear that the government would abuse the use of social networks. From the perspective of the US government, using Facebook and Myspace is a very beneficial thing because they are able to catch more criminals and it's a lot easier than sitting around and waiting. For the US population they feel violated and anxious because what would stop the government from investigting on anyone they want? This is not just happening in the US, it's also in the UK.
