Smithsonian Education - 1 views

  •
David May 1/23/11 This site is very educational. Great information with a reliable source. Too much advertising the museums. Overview: The website of the Smithsonian museum with a fun educational spin. The site has a few games with animations that are well put together. The games have good images and great animations that put complex things in simpler terms like comparing a planet size with a beach ball compared to a golf ball. The site overly advertised visiting the actual place too much. Everything that was clicked on encouraged visiting and it got very tiresome very quickly. Content: The site is very easy to navigate and find what one is looking for. There is a constant sidebar with information about where you are and what things are easiest to link to.. They list the curator of the museum who is in charge of the content on the website. The copyright of the website is 2010 which shows recent content on the website. There is an informational theme to the site, but the clear objective of this site is to get visitors to the museum. Design: The website is very well put together. It is impressive with the amount of graphics and page design that they put in effect on the site. The problem is that if users don't have the latest flash player they will have to download it and go through the download process. If this is for students the schools might restrict the ability to download the software. The website other than over advertisement is good for information and reliable for what one is looking for.

The students are also provided with information about the Smithsonian, topic they can explore, secrets of the Smithsonian, and events available for kids. This website is a great source to a variety of people. The links to each page provide a lot of information useful to educators, families, and students. Content: The website is extremely useful to all types of people from educator, families, and students. Teachers have access to lesson plans for all subject areas ranging from K-12th grade. Teachers are also provided information about taking a field trip to the Smithsonian and the programs it has to offer students. The tab for educators also has a link to online events that are taking place. For families the website contains different activities the Smithsonian has to offer as well as activity sheets for children. Kaci Philpot Overview: The intended purpose of this website is to provide elementary level students with fun and engaging games that build different skills and knowledge. Teachers can use some of the games for supplementing lessons such as; "volcano explorer", "chill the spill", and many more. Even games that don't seem like they would be educational are full of facts about various subjects and environmental awareness. Content Summary: For "First Look" I could not highlight the information because it was not in a text format, but the audience and basic content of the site are very clear. There were no specific authors listed for the games or information. The credibility of the authors is evident though because at the bottom near the copyright statement, it states that the company/sponsor is #1 in non-fiction media. It also has a very clear link for any questions about the site that works properly. I found it hard to find the latest revision date, most likely because the website mostly has games, but the content must be updated frequently because it has games that are up-to-date with the environmental issues today. All links to other sites work properly. In the "Information Quality" section of the evaluation, the website received all yeses. There are biases. However, they are clear when glancing through the content of the games. There was not any further information related to my purposes, but I did not really need any because I was only looking for games and activities to supplement lessons. Total yeses: 18 Total no's: 2 Total N/A: 1 Design Summary: The homepage uploaded very quickly and received all yeses. It has very strong eye appeal, it's clear what website you are visiting, and the copyright date is clearly stated at the bottom of the homepage along with the sponsor/provider. The navigation is easy and instructions for games and such are very clear and easy to follow. All internal and external links work properly. And internal links a

Overview Math Archives is specifically a math website for grade levels K-12. This website introduces lesson plans, software, contests and competitions. Each subject is very easily identified by grade level so that the user knows the appropriate application. This site is extremely comprehensive and helpful for math students and teachers. Content: This website loads quickly. This site is very helpful because it includes other math website links that you can click on and go to get more information on math. This website has well written information about the site and the authors of the site are identified down below the page. Although this site doesn't have a good updated revision, it clearly shows the contact information, phone number and address if you have any questions about the site. Design This site's homepage is well organized and is easy to move from the contents to the subject in Math that you would like to learn more about or the lesson plans that you would like to teach. The subject pages are appealing and provide great instructions to help the student obtain all the knowledge in math as they can. All the graphics, pictures, videos, and animations are great and really help the students desiring to learn math. Overall, this website just needs some updating to the information for more of the subjects.

Brianna Gillespie 9/14/11 OVERVIEW: This website is very kid friendly; it is colorful and easy to navigate. It has a wide variety of activities for children of all ages. It is a good website for teachers to use in their classrooms because of the many different lessons that can be learned. CONTENT: This website has activities focused on Kindergarten through second grade and third through sixth grade. Some of the main headings include games and activities, videos, eBooks, printables, and teacher resources. This website has quizzes too. Also, there is a library that children can look through to find books on many different topics. These would all very useful for teaching lessons. DESIGN: The design is very colorful and decorated like it is underwater; it is very appealing. I did come across a few links that did not work; however, I do not know if they are temporarily down or need to be fixed. All of the topics to choose from spell school with a q (sqool); I do not like this because it may confuse children about the correct way to spell school.

This is a great website for any art teacher K-12. Content: This website provides art teachers of any grade level with lesson plans to use in their classrooms. This website will be particularly handy for begging art teachers. It is easy to navigate the site, lessons for everything from drawing to painting to 3D is provided in detailed lesson plans by clicking on the subject. The lessons are step by step and are great for beginnig artists. This website is nice for teachers that need ideas on how to present the information to their students.
  •
Nathan Wonnacott 9/9/11 Overview: The Creative Spotlight is a site providing tutorials to new artists and supplies to continuing artist. It is clear that the site is more commercial than educational. It's a basic site with links to areas such as drawing, painting, and graphic design. Content: It is obvious that this site is directed toward art; however it doesn't provide helpful information. The tutorials focus on very limited instruction, followed by pictures to assist in "learning". The creator of the site only refers to himself by first name, which is an indicator that it's not a trustworthy source. Also, the copyright regulations are harsh, discouraging copying of any kind. I would not suggest this site for these reasons. Design: The design of this site is extremely basic, and links are slow to other sites. The format is cluttered and lacks revision. By the time one navigate through the site, he or she is probably disappointed by what they find.

Teachnology.com downloads quickly and efficiently with no problems even with so many graphics. Things are setup in a pleasing manner and links are clear and easy to navigate to but there may be a little too much distracting advertisement. There are a variety of different resources and ideas regarding teaching methods and lesson plans. An effective site map is provided as well as a help link making this site easier to navigate (disregarding the abundance of advertisements). Graphics downloaded quickly and add the purpose of the site. Information is clearly labeled and organized appropriately but the wealth of information (different links to similar information) makes this site a little overwhelming but very useful. If further information is needed, contact info is provided and can be found easily. The copyright date is clear and information is kept current on teachology.com.

HippoCampus - Homework and Study Help - 2 views

  •
Posted by Mitchell Clark 9/18/09: HippoCampus is an interactive homework site that provides homework help in math, science, psychology, history and religion. Content: HippoCampus is a simple but very effective homework help site sponsored by the Monterey Institute of Technology and Education. This site uses a combination of resources to help students understand the basics of nearly any level of math, science, psychology, history or religion class that they might encounter during high school or college. The lessons on this site use images, audio and user interaction to help with the comprehension of the material at hand. In addition to this there are also Spanish options for subjects such as calculus and algebra. There are also links to actual text books, but they are deceiving. It turns out that instead of being able to view the text, the user is presented with a video interview of the textbook's author about a certain subject. This can display a certain bias if the interview is conducted poorly. Another potential problem with this site is that it was last updated in 2007. Now for some subjects such as math or language arts this is irrelevant but for subjects such as science and psychology this could result in the absence of new and important information. Aside from the "textbook" links, this site is so well organized that the user can easily find the exact chapter or concept that they wish to review with just a few clicks of the mouse. Design: This site is well designed and very easy to navigate. There are four advertisements but they are organized neatly on the right side of the screen and are nothing more than links to scholarship information and additional resource sites. The sponsor of the site is clearly stated at the bottom of the page and there is a link to their contact information. The site is mainly composed of two sections, the first being a list of general subjects that the user might be interested in, i.e. math and the second section is where

Tools for Early Childhood Teachers - 0 views

  •
This website is for Early Childhood teachers and of them to get free lesson plans, units, and materials. Overall, this is a really cool website. I would use this website for lesson plan ideas and it is current information. It was last copyrighted in 2013-2014. They have a ton of different websites that teachers can go to and get different ideas. Also, there are blogs that you can follow to get more ideas. This website also includes the different degrees that you can get in different states. All the information is current and relevant for early childhood education. This website is very plain. However, I think that it is appropriate for the audience that it is for. It is professional in a way that you know it is reliable. This website is very nice and full of a ton of good information.

The purpose of the website is to provide teachers, students, and families with useful information and activities on educating students. Content: The content of this website is very useful for teachers that want to teach their students science, history, art, and language arts. As soon as I got to this webpage I knew where I was and what the purpose of the website was. The site is obviously sponsored by the Smithsonian center for education, however, I was unable to find specific authors of the site and their credentials. I was also unable to find the currency of the information, however, based on my knowledge, it seems pretty up to date. The bottom of the page says 2012 so they must keep up on it. The quality of the information seems very good. The content is easy to understand and is well written and organized. The site provides very useful things such as lesson plans, standards information, and really neat interactive games and activities. Overall, I think this would be a very useful site for students, teachers, and families. Design: As soon as I reached this site it caught my eye with cool graphics and a nice layout. The page downloads very quickly. It is easy to navigate through the site. The links provide useful information for everybody. The site includes an abundance of information so it is useful in many ways. I am unclear about the currency of the information because it is not clearly stated.

The site is easy to navigate although there are not directions available for the user. The multimedia use is working properly. This site is definitely worth visiting if you are a elementary teacher.
