Blended Learning | Nine Lanterns - 1 views

  • As a strategy and as a learning solution, blended is presently better received and more effective than online learning alone. Blended is usually taken to mean a blend or mix of classroom (in-person, face-to-face) and online techniques - where learners spend some of their time learning online; and other time in classrooms. Classroom learning is good for the immediacy it offers, the personal interaction. Alternatively, online learning better supports reflective activities, where learners need to think and act more deeply about content.

The amount of time people now spend on social networking sites has soared to six hours a week - that's up more than 80 per cent in a year, and the longer we spend online, the harder it is to connect with the real world. Psychologist Arthur Cassidy says that friendships forged via social networking sites and messaging services are different to those we make in the real world.

This is very much a talking point for PIE, what can students learn from social networked learning approach with guidance from an informed teacher on the pros and cons and what to do if something is not right within a social networking context

Hargittai, E. (2010). Digital Na(t)ives? Variation in Internet Skills and Uses among Members of the "Net Generation". Sociological Inquiry. 80(1):92-113. "People who have grown up with digital media are often assumed to be universally savvy with information and communication technologies. Such assumptions are rarely grounded in empirical evidence, however. This article draws on unique data with information about a diverse group of young adults' Internet uses and skills to suggest that even when controlling for Internet access and experiences, people differ in their online abilities and activities."

A guide to creating learning design for VET was developed by the Australian Flexible Learning Framework. The guide has been designed for learning designers in the Australian vocational education and training (VET) sector, seeking to plan and design online learning materials. The purpose of this guide is to provide designers with a series of model learning designs that they can use to plan the learning environments. The guide cannot capture all learning and design variables but provides information that is intended to inform the learning designer on how best these can be considered and dealt with.
